Another thing that gets used a TON is Stan Getz type bossa nova...you know like that Getz/Gilberto stuff.In general, keep your themes memorable and singable, and your improvisational "noodling" to a minimum . It makes for better and less obtrusive background music.

MattoShouldn't I have almost no solos?I'm very into singable melodies.....but should stay away from odd meters?thanks again,vicky the anti-noodle

Well yeah I'd say keep it light on the solos. But if the solos are very melodic/thematic, it's okay...it's really about it working in the background and not demanding too much attention.Odd meters...you could do something like Take 5 every once in a while, but nothing with lots of meter changes etc. And obviously the majority of the music shouldn't be odd meter.Music that's very cerebral and demands that you LISTEN to it won't make very good background music...cause it would detract from the action, dialog etc.
