Got a Return because of Genre..What Genre is it?

Post by jacinth » Wed Dec 26, 2007 8:41 pm

Hello Everyone,I am Kevin from the band Jacinth. I submitted 3 songs to a listing asking for a hard rock band that is in the range of Flyleaf. I have a female vocalist singing to hard rock tunes. The screener had great comments on the songs but said the music was not really right for the listing. If that is the case, i am not quite sure what listings to submit to. Can you help out?I have no clue how to link to our songs other than to give you our myspace site. If you can explain how to do it i will, but this is the only way i know....www.myspace.com/jacinthmusicif you could, please let me know where we fit. I submitted The Mocking Gun (acoustic), Her for Awhile and Cast The Stone. One screener told me we were a mix between Alanis and Evanescence. Is that not Flyleaf? Thanks for all your time and help. I/We really appreciate your opinions.Kevin

Kevin,I'll give this a shot but keep in mind I am not really a rocker and you will want to get more opinions on this. I hear traces of alternative, folk rock and metal in your music, but mainly alternative to my ears. It gets into the metal thing during your bigger sections. Good stuff by the way. I hope this helps.Kurt

well, the mocking gun has a real country sound to the accoustic (great song though)I can hear the alanis and evanesence, I think tho flyleaf is a hard spot to hit, they are a pretty hybrid band, the groove guitars, the big melodic vocal, and the almost metal back beat, theres definitely some similarities but all the song I heard where like, 2 elements flyleaf, 2 elements something else (on a personal note, you guys rock, I am diggin the tunes)
in the time of trumpets and guitars, there was an oboe

Thank you both for taking the time to listen.I really want to try and hit the listings as close as possible so as not to get a "return" for that reason only. Again, thanks for your time!If anyone else can try and pigeon-hole us i would love to hear what you think.Kevin

Too make things easier on everybody, here's the listing Kevin submitted to:COMMERCIAL SOUNDING INDIE / MODERN ROCK SONGS (w/vocals) ranging from Paramore, the Foo Fighters, and Jimmy Eat World to a bit heavier bands a la Scary Kids Scaring Kids, Flyleaf, the Used, etc, are sought by an East Coast-based Music Library/Publisher that has placed dozens of TAXI songs. Previous placements include spots on NBC, Discovery, History Channel and more. Excellent performances are a must. He offers a non-exclusive deal with a reversion clause [typically 2-5 years]. Songs must be Broadcast Quality (excellent sounding home recordings are OK). Please submit one to three songs online or per CD, include lyrics. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI and must be received no later than Dec. 11, 2007. TAXI # S071211MR

Kevin,we could probably help you more if you posted the entire text of your critique, but not everybody is comfortable doing that. What I can say is that all the "a la" bands that I'm familiar with which are mentioned in this listing (including Flyleaf) seem to have a more electric and somewhat harder hitting, more "rock" sound than you guys. There are some sections in your songs that you submitted that are a bit more "rock" sounding, but overall it's quite mellow...the mellow side of Amy Lee so to speak. That being said I think you came very close to hitting the mark in this listing, and if I were you I'd keep submitting to similar listings...and obviously to anything that mentions Evanescence or Amy Lee specifically. HTH, and best of luck to you, you definitely have some quality material there...if I could make one general comment it is that your choruses could be more memorable and musically compelling. That's really what's missing for me in the 3 songs I listened to. The choruses aren't quite as melodically interesting and catchy as the rock hits I hear on the radio. I know this may have nothing to do with why you were returned here, but it's something that stuck out to me. Really work on those chorus melodies until they are undeniable.matto

Matto,Thanks for the comments, they really do help out.Below is the overall comment from the listener:Hi Kevin, thanks for the opportunity to listen to your music and share some of my thoughts with you. Some solid, riff driven songs here. The musicianship stands out nicely, the performances are heavy, but serve the song and help carry the melody well. Vocal performances are solid, performances feel confident and have style. Lyrical ideas get stronger in Cast the Stone, I feel the simple ideas that give the audience the ability to bring some of their own experience to the song is more effective/memorable. Style is a bit different than the listing is searching for, be sure to submit for listings that fit your style well. Best of luck!I have just submitted Cast The Stone and Her for Awhile to a couple of listings that wanted Female vocal hard rock songs and one that mentioned Evanescence.I will continue to submit to these listings based on what you said. I really feel that we are in that realm of Alanis, EVanescence and maybe even Avril's darker side (not the punky stuff). Thanks again for your time.Kevin
