60's instrumental updated

Post by mikebarresi » Wed Nov 21, 2007 1:55 pm

Hello!!well i've been working on this track and here is what i came up with. It is for this listing. 1960s-style original INSTRUMENTALS (no vocals) are sought by the Owner of a Music Production Library for use in film/TV/commercials, etc. ALL GENRES associated with the decade of the 1960s will work: Folk, British Invasion Rock, Pop, Country, Jazz, Psychedelic Rock, Soul, etc, etc. Great, authentic-sounding performances are a must - he needs tracks that sound like they were lifted straight out of the 1960s. He needs tracks with button endings - no fade-outs. This production music veteran signed many TAXI writers to his previous company, and wants to repeat that same type of success with this venture as well. This company offers a standard exclusive deal. Great performances are essential. Broadcast quality needed [excellent home recordings are OK]. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS ONLY - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI. For ground submissions, please enclose a S.A.S.E. if you would like a response. Submissions must be received no later than Dec. 6, 2007. TAXI # Y071206INhttp://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_id=76959&stream=truelet me know what you thinkthanks Mike

Hey Mike,I love the vibe of this tune. I think you are right on target for the listing. My one critique is that the organ on the melody sounds a bit umm cheesy. On the other hand the guitar melody on the "chorus" is way cool! I would use the guitar maybe with a slightly different tone for the verses instead. With that I think you will have a winner.I'll hopefully be posting my own entry for you guys to critique sometime next week.Best of luck.Cisco

Hey Mike, Right on target, i would expect a forward here. I wouldn't classify the organ sound as cheesy, it's a little "church" sounding to me. If anything I might suggest playing with the "leslie" sound a little. maybe roll it off during the verses and then flick it on going into the chorus.Honestly, It might not have bothered me at all if i wasn't listening for it.Drums and piano sound good too, right out of Motown!

Hey thanks.. Motown was the vibe I was going for since i live just across the river from Detroit. I've had the chance to study and talk with some of the cats from that era! mike

I think you nailed the Mowtown thing . . . especially the drums, they have that great Mowtown ambience. The only critique I can think of is that maybe the other instruments could use a dose of that same "ambience" or room sound. I'd be surprised it this wasn't forwarded just as it is though, sounds right on the money to me.

Usually a Hammond organ player will turn the rotating Leslie speaker off and on during a performance. Leaving the rotating speaker effect either on or off all the time removes a lot of the animation from the lead part. Also, I didn't hear any smears (glissandos and such) that are typical of this kind of organ performance. You definately got a lot of Motown-ish stuff going on there, especially the drums. It's real close.
Jazz guy (writer/player).

Mike,I think you did a good job of capturing much that went into the early 60's Motown sound. It seems you've been studying the 'Supremes' closely! Okay--what could be better? Some of the instrumentation I think could've been different. For example, you use an organ patch, which is cool, but it sounds more like a 1950's Ice Rink organ rather than the B3 sound of the 60's. Also, there's some guitar in there that I couldn't really identify, and it seemed like you went back and forth between a surf sound and the Motown sound.Mainly, though, it's the groove. There were a couple of spots where you went to a double time feel, and the song picked up considerably. The balance of the tune though sort of dragged, I thought, with the main groove. What if you used that double time feel throughout?Overall, a really good effort. Just seemed to me that you mixed different styles (all 60's!) into one song, and they maybe didn't go so well together. Just like cooking spaghetti sauce--simple is better.
