New York song for TV/Film listing

Post by geo » Sat Nov 24, 2007 10:02 am

Hey guys, 1st mix, very basic, will be redoing the vocal and adding a real live sax solo in the middle. I split the drums up into stereo and worked on spreading out the mix better. Any comments or suggestions welcomed as I have time to make changes. At least I know I nailed the genre this time . GeoMEDIUM to UPTEMPO SONGS ABOUT CITIES (with vocals) from ANY GENRE are sought by an East Coast Music Library/Publisher that has placed dozens of TAXI songs. Lyrically, he'd like songs that deal with the topics of Cities, their people, and landmarks. As examples, think along the lines of "City of New Orleans" (Arlo Guthrie), "New York, New York" (Frank Sinatra) to more modern tunes like "London" (Third Eye Blind). He offers non-exclusive deals for vocal songs. Songs must be Broadcast Quality (excellent sounding home recordings are OK). Please submit one to three songs online or per CD, include lyrics. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI and must be received no later than Dec. 6, 2007.http://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_ ... m=trueGood Morning New YorkLyrics and music by George Daniels© 2007Chorus:Feel the thunder, in the distance it groans,Hear the sound of high heels on the sidewalk a city marches on.Fell the thunder, as the streets come back to life,To the smell of the coffee, the love of a Lady and the blare of a cabby’s horn.Good morning New York,Good morning New York.Verse 1:You know, it’s the City that never sleeps, All those lights on Broadway, just as bright as they can be,And you better watch out, on 42nd Street.ChorusVerse 2:You know, Big Apple’s just the place for me,It’s got everything I want, it’s just playground by the sea,I even played a set, before they closed CB GB’s.Break: spoken (sing)Trippin’ Time’s Square, it’s not the same anymore, (Feel the thunder)Pimps and prostitutes replaced by corporate whores. (Feel the thunder)But our Lady stands, her torch lights the Great White Way, (Feel the thunder)And on her sidewalks you can hear the Jazzman play.SoloVerse 3: You know, I’ll rock Gotham, wait and see,Take a ride on the subway, play unplugged on MTV,And wasn’t there a Disney Store, on 42nd Street?Chorus (x 2)

I think it's a cool song, but it's really hard for me to get past the dated sounds of the instruments. I can't remember what you're recording on, but it would make a HUGE difference to invest in a computer based system with some realistic sounding virtual instruments. Your ideas are very cool, like I said, and more modern sounding instruments with a more polished vocal take on something like this could get it a lot closer to that ever-present "bar".HTH, best of luck!Dan

The drum sounds are more "real" sounding than much of what I heard at the Road Rally recently. Good job with the rhythm section. The guitars seemed to be, perhaps, too consistant from beginning to end. I didn't hear much contrast from that part of the arrangement. Maybe putting an acoustic guitar track on to balance out the electric and adding some melodic lines or hits to compliment the vocal. Also, "the city that never sleeps" has been used quite a bit before. You're on the right track. Keep on pushin'.

I don't mind the sound of the drums but the use of syncopated shots throughout dates the piece (80's). I'd try a 1/16th dance groove behind it with some synth ostinato pattern to bring it up to date -- less guitar also. Then process the vocal with something unique (try some of your guitar efx on the vocal) to make it more interesting (instead of burying it in the mix). The lyrics work.doug s.

Thanks for the listen guys, I've had my head buried in manuals trying to get Logic up and running for this project but I don't think I'll make it. We are redoing vocals on Monday with my new compressor and hopefully the Jazzman will be over to lay down sax on Tuesday which will help break up the rhythm section a bit. Also tweak the guitars a bit. On "the city that never sleeps" line, I wanted to incorporate the nicknames of the city (Big Apple, Gotham, etc.) in each verse, I'm hoping this works for me for this sub. Thanks again for the listen... Geo
