Sad Instrumental
Here I am boys and girls, back from an enforced hiatus due to computers dropping like flies. Anyway, there are those who say most of my music is pretty sad, so I thought I'd have a pop at this listing. Here's the first one hot off the press. Let me know what you think if you have time Version 2 http://www.goldingmultimedia.com/dg/sad2.mp3

Does anyone here know why when I click links open it comes up "internet explorer cannot display this page?" I've clicked on their suggestions when it says that, but nothing seems to work. If I can get that problem fixed, than I can give critiques.....and this is what I ultimately want to do....it actually helps me when I critique folks music 'coz I learn too.Broadjam is the one link where I can hear music.....it doesn't give me any problem....there have been a few other links that work as well. TAXI links aren't working for me though.

Re: Sad Instrumental
Hi Chits, I could be that your browser is not correctly setup to open audio files (i.e. it does not have the correct "helper" program). Broadjam works because it does not link you to a file, it links you to their own player so you don't need to have your own player configured to play those songs. With the link on this thread and with taxi links you are being linked directly to a file (an mp3 or an mp4 stream) and your browser needs to know how to open those files. PM me if you want and tell me what browser you are using and I can show you how to make sure you have a player linked to open those files. Now to the song. David, it is a nice piece but there are 2 things that stand out: 1) it sound very dated. I kept picturing a love scene from an 80s movie while listening to it. The violin sound specially sounded very synth-y. If you are going for an all-electronic sound then it might work with those sounds but you have to make sure you target listings that specifically asks for electronic music. If the listing asks for "current sounding" then you may need to use different sounds. 2) It didn't sound all that sad to me, as I said, it sounded more like love scene music (ok, for some that may be a sad moment but not for me ). I actually think this piece could have worked for the B-movie listing (it did say 70s and 80s, right?). I don't know which listing in particular you are targeting, there is one for "love scene" instrumentals on the latest list and another one for "sad" music. I'd be more inclined to put this one under "love scene" but that may just be personal taste. Both of those listing do say to say away from obviously MIDI generated sounds and there are a few sounds here that fall into that category. If you were targeting those listings I would actually try for a more organic approach, strip the pads and elect. piano and leave the "real" piano and the violin melody using a better, more natural sounding instrument. I think the melody is nice enough that it could stand on its own just with the piano on the background. But as always, that's just one opinion. Antonio

This is jes me but it doesn't strike me as sad......more as sexy and pensive. This is jes an opinion, though. It's got that whole making-up-love-scene where they're really sorry they hurt each other but they're still hot for each other. Sort of like David Sanborn/Eric Clapton in the hot tub scene in Tequila Sunrise (although if you're younger than me, you probably didn't see it unless it was a date movie for ya).I bet that doesn't make sense. I'm keeping it on my iTunes, is that okay? I can delete it if you want.

Re: Sad Instrumental
David, I found a love scene instrumental listing that would work for this song, if you're interested....if you've got your heart set on the sad instrumental one, I can dig that too, just thought I'd put it out there as another opportunity.

Re: Sad Instrumental
Great feedback all, thanks mucho. It seems pretty clear that it fits a love scene more than a sad scene, I'll steer it towards that listing instead.Jchitty - if all else fails, try right clicking the link, and 'Save Target As', assuming you use Windows.Antonio - The electic piano is a bit dubious, I agree. Grand piano just seemed to take up too much space in the mix. I'm going to try it again, but stripped down to a minimum.Squid - To be honest, it's hard for me to think of love scene music without smiling. Many years ago, a drummer I played with used to say that he and his wife made love to the theme of 'Rawhide'. Apparently it had just the right tempo. Of course you can keep it on Itunes I'm going to have a play around with it tonite, and see if I can 'unmidi' it.Thanks again all.

Giddy-up, head 'em out! Oh, and I meant to say that Sanborn/Clapton played in the soundtrack. Not to imply in any way they were actually in the hot tub. Although, now that I think about it, that might've made the movie even better. I mean, Mel was good. But Sanborn was hot.

Re: Sad Instrumental
David, the intro Rhodes part sounds fine and suitably sad. The piano melody is to angular and "strange" both from the "sadness" point of view but also for background music in general, this would be quite distracting. It's also real choppy and rough, with big velocity (and associated timbre) jumps, and it clashes rhythmically and harmonically with the rhodes part in spots. The violin part is allright, but not really sad and too slopply in places. What are you using for the violin? It sounds to me like the sample your using has expressive capabilities, what with the nice legato and slides I'm hearing, but you are not taking good advantage of it, and as a result the part sounds sterile and fake.I think it's possible this tune could work for the love scene listing if you improve the melodies and overall production values. I don't think the instrumentation is the problem for these high bar "no midi" listings, it's more that your parts are not polished enough.HTH,matto

Re: Sad Instrumental
Good points Matto. I've spent some time adjusting the velocities and changed to sound to grand piano. I've also replaced the strings pad with cello. As for the violin part, I'll work on that over the weekend. It's the Stradivari Solo Violin. I only got it recently, but it does seem quite useful once I get to grips with it.The link is updated in the opening post. Thanks for the comments
