Re: Sad Instrumental
Hi David,I like your "sad" tune a lot. I feel there is a lot of sadness in it. The kind that lays under the surface- "a person smiles even though they are hurting inside"-- I feel a lot of loneliness in it. I do agree with some of the others: I would prefer the strings to be softer and smoother.Reading everyones comments it made me wonder if the two songs I was planning on sending to the ' sad instrumental & the emotional instrumentional listings"are infact "sad " enough. (This is what I love about this forum- so many people can listen to the same piece of music- and get so many different interpretations.I would love to hear from you all, Song # 1 Tell Me Nowhttp://www.reynovia.com/tellmenow.mp3Song #2 She walks on the wind:http://www.reynovia.com/shewalksonthewindedit.mp3Bob

Trust me. Your playing and your writing are so expressive. Beautiful. I loved Tell Me Now the best but they're both lovely.

Quote:Good points Matto. I've spent some time adjusting the velocities and changed to sound to grand piano. I've also replaced the strings pad with cello. As for the violin part, I'll work on that over the weekend. It's the Stradivari Solo Violin. I only got it recently, but it does seem quite useful once I get to grips with it.Hmm...I wish you hadn't changed the Rhodes...Now the melody can't be heard properly over the piano accompaniment. (However the melody does sound a lot smoother with the velocity changes you implemented ) The Cello works alright I guess although I might have used a Cello section to allow the solo violin to come out more. The level in the Cello jumps around where the Violin starts, that has to be a lot smoother.I also think the piano arpeggios in the comp part need to sustain more, so there isn't that weird gap between every chord. This contributes to the somewhat choppy and wooden sounding performance (along with the choppy piano melody), where you'd want something more singing and mournful I think. As far as the Violin: so it is the Strad, I had a feeling . Yeah in that case the lifeless sound is definitely not the instrument's fault... .First you have some glitchy note transitions to take care of, like that strange double-bouncy transition between that first really high note and the one that follows it. Make sure your velocities are way low when you want a normal detache articulation otherwise you get too much bow attack. For the rest, you simply need to shape the phrases using contoller 11 (Expression) which contolls the instrument's "volume" (bowing strength), and Modulation, which controls the depth of the vibrato. If you need guidance, listen to the Violin solo from the Schindler's List theme, or Kevin's version of "Danny Boy" posted on another thread, to hear how a real violin player uses bowing and vibrato to shape a phrase. You might also apply very light pitchbend at some note transitions to mimick how violin players "center" the pitch after certain note transitions (like when there's a position change).I also think you've got too many slides in your part, I know they sound cool but violin players use these for emphasis, they don't slide around the neck like ice skaters .HTH, and best of luck to you!matto

Re: Sad Instrumental
I hope Mr Laskow is offering a safety net for the screeners who will screen this listing , (or should I say )? prepare to have some paper tissues close at hand as well...Good stuff, both of you. I'd say its probably sad enough. Perhaps Bobs track "Tell me Now" is a tiny bit too much on the jazzy side for what the listing asks for, but IMHO "She walks on the wind" and Davids "sad2" is right on the money.
