'70s Arena Rock...
Workin on this listing:New Listing 1970's ARENA ROCK SONGS with huge riffs & choruses are sought by the Pres. of an LA-based Publishing Co. for film/TV placement. He wants original, CURRENT-SOUNDING material, of course, but in the style of the Marshall Tucker Band, Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin, Foreigner, ZZ Top, Foghat, Bad Company, Heart, Aerosmith, KISS, Grand Funk Railroad, etc. Also think more recent bands that exude that 70s rock sound a la Wolfmother, The Darkness, The White Stripes, Kings of Leon, etc. He wants "big dumb rock songs" that's about "the show." He doesn't want Top 40 type songs nor Art Rock - he's looking for straight FM Classic Rock, but with a very contemporary sound. The writer(s) must own 100% of the song's publishing/master rights. He splits the license fee with you 40/60 [that 60% is for you] and doesn't take any publishing. This company's owner will screen your submissions. Broadcast quality needed [excellent home recordings are OK]. Please submit one to three songs online or per CD, include lyrics. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS ONLY - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI. For ground submissions, please enclose a S.A.S.E. if you would like a response. Submissions must be received no later than Nov. 14, 2007. TAXI # Y071114RKIt's not mastered yet, so I wanted to see what if anyone had any suggestions before I do that...If you have a chance to let me know that'd be great!"Slow Down (You're Killing Me)"http://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_ ... trueThanks in advance,Dan

Not to be impatient, but I'd really appreciate some feedback on this to let me know if I'm on the right track!

Even with all the references in the listing, I still don't have a clear enough picture of what they want for this one. The GOOD news is Taxi doesn't have to try and guess amongst the mixed messages. The person listening will be from the company. Your song sound's suitably '70s- I don't know if it's "big and dumb" enough, but that's not necessarily a bad thing I need to listen again through speakers, but you may want to darken the guitars a little. They sound a little too fizzy, but that may be my earbuds.

This doesn't seem quite "Big" enough to match what I interpret the listing as. The one part that I think does is the guitar solo in the middle. The listing says "Huge riffs and choruses" and I just don't get that impression. The drums never seem to do more than a basic beat and the rhythm guitars could do a faster pattern - at least on the choruses. The one problem that you might have in trying that is that the lyric "Slow Down" doesn't lend itself to bulking up the energy too much.As a disclaimer, I am not a rock musician and am not extremely familiar with the reference bands., so take it for what it is worth.

I think you are on the right track. On the intro either shorten it or put some drums + bass in to add a kick and get it going, add some excitement. The guitars need some EQ to bring them out more. This may be something that you will do during the final mix / master. The drums are too straight for 70's rock (or for the contemporary examples listed) I believe you need more fills and cymbal work. The organ sounds too thin and needs a more rock edge (think Uriah Heep or Deep Purple ). The vocal reminds me of a few 70's era hard rock bands. The solo is cool and has the sound of the genre. The listing does call for "1970's ARENA ROCK SONGS with huge riffs & choruses" that are "original, CURRENT-SOUNDING" "in the style of" all of those classic bands BUT "Also think more recent bands that exude that 70s rock sound a la Wolfmother, The Darkness, The White Stripes, Kings of Leon, etc. "I think if you bring out the individual instruments and brighten up the sound a bit, listen to some of the more contemporary examples listed, and maybe add some of those elements you will do well.Good Luck!!Ed

Very cool song daniel. You may not wanna hear this, but my first thought was Alice Cooper --- but maybe that was a Halloween thing I've been sitting on this tune for a while, haven't found a place to submit. We weren't going for dumb rock , but the intent was to have a 70's sound with a modern edge. Dunno if we'll submit, but here's the song. Hey Mister ManI’ve seen too much of what I can’t look atTo close my eyes to the truth anymoreJustice blind as a baseball bat between the eyesReality hit me in the face of a childWho was looking just to stay aliveHey Mister Man with your head in the sandWeren’t you gonna change the worldIt’s in your handsHey Sister Now with your head in the cloudsWeren’t you gonna change the worldIt’s in your handsToo much stuff in right and wrong placesNever enough too much to go aroundSomebody’s always soundbiting the hand that feedsSqueaky little hot wheel debutantsAre the only ones getting the greaseHey Mister Man with your head in the sandWeren’t you gonna change the worldIt’s in your handsHey Sister Now with your head in the cloudsWeren’t you gonna change the worldIt’s in your handsDon’t tell me that Jesus savesWhile you sing Amazing Grace and stuff your faceYou may be political and a liberalBut will you pass your plateHey Mister Man with your head in the sandWeren’t you gonna change the worldIt’s in your handsHey Sister Now with your head in the cloudsWeren’t you gonna change the worldIt’s in your handsHey Mister Man with your head in the sandWeren’t you gonna change the worldIt’s in your handsHey Sister Now with your head in the cloudsWeren’t you gonna change the worldIt’s in your headI’ve seen to much of what I can’t look atTo close my eyesSomebody’s always soundbiting the hand that feedsSomebody, tell me the TruthSoembody, tell me the TruthWords and Music Copyright 2007 by Aub Delane Robertson and Ponco SatrioAub

Hey there Aub,I love the song...definitely feel the '70s vibe, and it's super catchy, too, which never hurts The chorus might not be quite as huge as it sounds like they're looking for, but I would say submit it anyway. Who knows what they consider huge, and it's a great song, so I wouldn't be surprised if you got the forward! And Alice Cooper, huh? Yeah, I can hear that...hey, he's '70s rock, so it works for me!Dan

I really like the remix. It definitely feels bigger - especially in the choruses. In the chorus the cymbal seems to become a "wash" without any distinctive hits - that is a bit distracting for me. (I'm not listening on very good speakers - so that could be part of the problem).Nice job.
