Well I see that the deadline is already past for this one, but since we're on the subject I wonderif I might be able to make this work for a future similar listing. I like it - good luck with it.I was thinking about doing this one, but aside from the lack of time (subject for a different thread), I haven't watched TV very much recently and especially not cable. I'm seriously considering getting cable or satellite just so I have a reference for what is currently being used. (When I watch TV I tend to watch older movies)

Remember that if you are doing music as a business and reporting as such to the IRS (even as a side business) your cable bill is probably at least partially tax-deductible. After all, how are you supposed to know what the trends are in cable/satellite TV music if you don't have a way to do ongoing research, right? MazzPS: This is just from my experience, see your accountant to be sure, don't take my word for it. This is not to be construed as professional advice.

I probably better start making some money off of my music before I deduct a "questionable" expense from my taxes . (I wonder how many years of losses before the IRS says - no this is just a hobby you can't take a loss anymore?)It reminds me of the scene from the movie "Dave" where Kevin Klein comes home to the Secret Service Agents in his house and his first reaction is that he thought that his TV was a legit deduction because he does impressions.I had an attorney friend of mine (quite familiar with tax issues) tell me that you can take all sorts of questionable deductions as long as you are willing to take the risk of an audit.The tax issue is a whole other subject that probably would be quite dangerous to start discussing on this forum. (Unless somebody on the forum is actually an accountant or tax attorney).

The question of deductibility aside - you are right about one thing Mazz: If I'm serious about this then I really do need to do that kind of research and consider it a cost of doing business - just like I need to be purchasing the latest releases if I am trying to write for song pitches.

I've been deducting my DirectTV bill for years, my wife is also an actress and voiceover talent and she uses it as research and keeping current as well. My accountant doesn't seem to think it's a questionable deduction at all. I leave it to him to keep the IRS off my back (yes you do need to show a profit every few years). The key to audits is to keep good records and all receipts. I was audited years ago when my wife started to file as an actor. She was driving to a lot of auditions and they were looking at her mileage total. We went back and were able to prove more miles were driven than we claimed and that pretty much closed the book on that audit. (Our auditor had audited entertainers before and was familiar with the deductions taken in that business which was a plus).When you start making money from your music, you'll want to research (with the aid of your accountant) all the deductions you possibly can. It's perfectly legal as long as you are above board and can support it with documentation.Good luck on a prosperous career!Mazz
