Re: Instrumental metal...do you think this is on t
Hey there Martin,Appreciate the comments. First off, I'm working on getting that kick drum to sound more natural. So many metal bands are using sound replacer on their kicks these days that the sound can almost be justified, but I definitely think it would be a good idea to push it a little more into the natural realm As to the guitar sound, that was a conscious choice, as well. Since I modeled the song after Tool, I wanted a natural tube sound; heavy, but not obtrusive. The tool style is propelled by drums and bass as much as guitar, so I wanted that chunky, heavy-but-not-too-distorted-or-huge guitar sound. I checked out your track, and I definitely see what you were saying, but I think that that was just a little too "scooped-Boogie" for what I was attempting here.Definitely appreciate the comments though! I have til wednesday to submit, so I'm going to tighten these up as much as possible, despite that fact that most of my city is in fire danger and being evacuated today...but that's what my mobile rig's for!Dan

Heres my impression. I think both tracks are good fits for the listing. "Run for your life" definitely has that maiden feel, But I'd be careful with those hi-hats, theyre a big give away with regards to sounding fake. You could probably cut em in half and still retain the galloping Maiden feel of the tune. Also the melody guitars sound a little to direct here, something I didn't notice in "Decline". Speaking of Decline, I think a tune like this you can get away with fake drums more easily as modern metal drummers often play with the precision and feel of a machine anyway. Just my opinion. Production wise I think decline is the winner, I like the tool vibe as well. Good luck.

Thanks, I took the the advice and comments you guys left (which I really appreciated by the way!), and made some corrections. Here are the new versions. If you guys wouldn't mind checking them out before I turn them in that would be great! Here are the links:"Decline"http://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_ ... ream=1"Run For Your Life"http://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_ ... am=1Thanks again in advance!Dan

I'm listening to "Run for Your Life" and it sounds 100x better! Good job. I don't know what you did to the lead guitar but it sounds really good, no hint of directness. The hats sound much better to. "Decline" sounds great to, but I thought it was fine to begin with. Good job and good luck.

Thanks! The story is, I originally DID record it direct because I was worried about whether or not I would have to evacuate from the fires soon (which I did), and I really wanted to have something finished in case I couldn't get back. Since I was able to get back into my house yesterday, I did what I normally would have done in the first place: tracked it with an amp! I agree that it sounds much better, too, and I'm glad I was able to do that.Glad you like it though!
