New Song - Skin - For Your Review

Post by aubreyz » Sun Jul 01, 2007 3:27 pm

Hey my forum friends - Ponch and I just knocked out another tune. It's a rewrite of an old song of mine, and is in a similar style to the Neo-psychedelic rock tune we last produced, but with a little more edge to it. It looks like this is our primary genre-- it just comes natural and feels right. Would love your input on this first mix:Skin I want to jump out of my skinAnd slip into something a little more comfortableI want to jump out of my skinDidn’t you say I need to be more flexibleYou make me want to jump out of my skinMake me want to jump out of my skinWould it even matter to youWould it even matter to youI want to go out of my mindThen maybe I would be a little more sensibleI want to go out of my mindDidn’t you say I need to be more logicalYou, make me want to go out of my mindMake me want to go out of my mindWould it even matter to youWould it even matter to youYou, make me want to jump out of my skinMake me want to jump out of my skinWould it even matter to youWould it even matter to youI’m a caterpillar baby And I don’t care what you say about my cocoonWe’ll square up laterCause when I break out I’m gonna come right after youYou make me want to jump out of my skinMake me want to jump out of my skinWould it even matter to youWould it even matter to youI want to get up in your faceAnd tell you everything you ever did to meI want to get up in your faceAnd let you know that I don’t need your sympathyYou, make me want to get up in your faceMake me want to get up in your faceWould it even matter to youWould it even matter to youYou make me jump out of my skinYou make me jump out of my skinIf I don’t matter to youThen you don’t matter to meI’m not gonna let youGet under my skin

Love it, and that's about all I have to say about that.I suppose if I had to try and change anything I would bring the vocal up a notch in places, but overall, I think it sounds great.
It's a fine line between a thick soup and stew.

Its not my fav type of music but I like the song. Its catchy and original. Its well recorded, nice tones, gains are set well, the mix is good but the vox are too low man. I`d raise them by about 2db. The harmonies levels are good, its just the lead. The guitar solo is good, I might pan it a little more though, its kind of a texture solo so panning it will make it sound more "texture"! It sound like its trying to be a lead part where it is. There is a little too much beater in the kick sound for me. Thats either a recording error or a personal preference so its not gonna change either way but I couldnt stop thinking about while I was listening. You might be able to EQ it out? Or do you like it? Summary - good lyrics, nice attitude in the vox. Good job man! I like it!Colm.

Wall of sound with a touch. I like the mix/arrangement, allthough it feels a little crowded and repeatable sometimes, its still rocks - speaking production/mix. I like a lot of the verse lyrics but miss a better hook in the chorus, wich would lift it up where it belongs as the production is so good. Not too enthusiastic about the the chorus lyrics and the hook could be even better.Other than that; plain great; a good job guys.

Thanks for the input. It's cool to hear from some new screen names! I hope to have some time later this week to tweak the mix a bit.btw- the kick sound is intentional. I'm so tired of the typical kick sound. We're going for something a little more lo-fi, somewhat retro but just different. One encouraging thing in the comments was "maybe it was a recording error". Our drummer is a mouse... computer mouse that is... but we were going for a less than perfectly miked kick sound. I guess in that we succeeded... whether or not it works as intended, time will tell.I still need to add some automation moves to the mix... that should help the vocals in a few places. Thanks again. I thoughtfully consider every suggestion, and appreciate the compliments too.Aub

I like it but the chorus didn't stand out enough for me. The intensity just wasn't any different in the latter part of the verse than during chorus. I'm not sure it needs a new chorus more than it just needs change the drum part right before the chorus.
