Winning Anthems
did anyone else submit to this dispatch listing:NEW LISTING - Current-sounding and upbeat ALTERNATIVE ROCK-POP SONGS (with vocals) with lyrical themes about winning, succeeding, achieving, “I am the best,” etc. are quickly needed by an LA-based Music Library headed up by veterans of that industry. Two good examples are “We Are the Champions” by Queen (from their 1977 release “News Of The World” + many greatest hits CDs) and “Extraordinary” by Liz Phair (from her 2003 release “Liz Phair”). Great vocal and instrumental performances are essential. Male or female vocals are OK. They offer a non-exclusive, 50/50 split deal - you keep your original copyrights. Broadcast quality needed. Submissions must be received no later than 4:00 PM, Pacific Standard Time (California time), Thursday, June 21, 2007. TAXI # D070621ARI'll show you mine, if you show me yours. We WinTop of my broadjam (soon to be history) page. I have a few more hours for tweaking tomorrow morning, before the deadline. Any suggestions are most welcome.

Re: Winning Anthems
Nice! And I just realized who it sounded like. Sounds like something Trevor Rabin might do. Dave

Re: Winning Anthems
No production issues, sounds great as usual. If I had to nitpick something, it would be the whistle.. it just sounds a bit wimpy compared with the power drums etc. I could imagine some-Van Halen-type guitar growling and screaming in there too, but as a guitarist, I can imagine that in most things Nice work, Steve
It's a fine line between a thick soup and stew.

Re: Winning Anthems
Steve,I didn't have a slot to try and hit this listing, but wanted to. Cool track-- the whistle bugged me too (maybe a more distant bigger than life whistle from hell ), but other than that the track is very good.As far as the listing goes:To me it sounds a little more classic rock than alternative, though it does have a tint of NIN as mentioned. It's really hard to do a stomp clap thing without sounding like a Queen knockoff - I think you've done an admirable job there, but IMHO the first thing most anybody is going to hear is... that sounds like "We Will Rock You". For this listing though, that might even be an advantage. If I were submitting this, I would be most concerned by this phrase in the listing:Current-sounding and upbeatUpbeat? Hmmm. That could be debated, as could current sounding.Yet even with those concerns, I think you have a strong shot at a forward. Nice work!--- as usual.Aub

Re: Winning Anthems
Quote:Quote:Thanks Jeffe, That was constructive. Sounds 80's.....hmmm makes sense, that's when i wasin the business the deepest, band wise, touring wise. I'll tell ya, this is SUCH a common issue that I think we should write a book or something. This was (still is to come extent) my biggest problem "coming back" to music after a long time away. I just read this in the other thread, and I figured it belonged here. I as well, suffer from too many '80's production concepts floating around in my headWell - they mention the Queen thing, and then they say up beat and current. Understanding listing requirements is still not one of my stronger points. I'd started writing it for something else, and then this dispatch listing showed up. It's supposed to be an anthem for a Cdn Rugby team that the fans sing. And it is designed to be exactly the same tempo as the Queen thing. If I could somehow capture the sound of 1000 people all singing it, that would help give it the sound I'm after. It also still need some crowd noise.http://www.guinness.com/ca_en/NeedASong/As far as current goes, I'm gonna see if I can get one of my punk friends to come over and sing it instead of me, this morning (good luck), maybe get him playing nasty, out of tune, completely punk and (sololess) guitar. The whistle will be edited to either sound neccessary, or it will dissappear. thanks y'all for listening, and your suggestions are just what the doctor ordered.

Re: Winning Anthems
Steve,Good stuff! I heard some of the 80s influence in there as well but I really like the song. If you replaced the tremelo voice in the verses with a guitar sound (like in the outro) I think that would help as, to my ears, it takes away from the impact of the lead vocal. Also, form-wise, rather than a long outro, maybe do a short breakdown after the last chorus and then blast into the chorus again adding the huge guitar, do it a couple of times and then end on a big 1 chord that fades in to the distance. I think that would get people riled up and then take it off in to infinity, like the team spirit goes on forever! As much as I like keyboards (duh, that's my axe!) I think the organ at the end would work better as a texture behind the wall o' guitars.I suggest submitting as is because it's strong and it's also worth revisiting, to beef it up a bit. I can hear a whole stadium of fans la la la-ing to this !Mazz

imagine if John Williams and Trent Reznor met at Bernard Hermann's for lunch and Brian Eno was the head chef!

Re: Winning Anthems
Quote:Well done Steve. I think you have a good pitch here. I see time is almost up but here are some ideas. I thought the whistle was a bit thin. I'd be looking for a bigger sound and less of it. I agree the organ sound is good and could come in earlier. I was looking for something to go double time in the rhythm. You have a gating effect that does that a touch. This is good work. I enjoyed it.thx pal, the intro still need work too! The organ is my favorite axe, but it's a bit of a dodo bird these days. Whistle is better louder, & way less often.Double time? Interesting!TIP - sometimes, we have a little bit extra time for tweaking, after the submission deadline has gone by, as long as you've already submitted on time. Just re-upload. But ya never know, when they're actually gonna listen!

Re: Winning Anthems
Wow Steve. Just listened to the cut- 3:32 PM EST -- Ditto what Mazz said BTW. This is stadium rock from the gitgo. The whistle is understood, but I'd blow it away as it distracts (to my beat up ears) from the other textures. This cut will get forwarded and placed somewhere sometime. Just about any film where good prevails at the end could use this at the credit roll. best,bc

Re: Winning Anthems
thanks B, I'm gonna write another 10 more! Because ya can't ever have enough winning songs, eh. Unfortunately, this is cutting into my available time for my other co-writes. Never enough time, wah wah wah. Every time I go to a football game, there's always some moron blowing a whistle at inappropriate times. It's kind of stuck in my head.
