First Time

Post by apjc10 » Mon May 28, 2007 9:59 pm

This is my first post...I just joined. I am not certain that I know how to do this exactly but it looks like some of you send links to Soundclick so I joined there so you could hear the stuff. I am not sure why but the "I'm Not Fine" track may play slow on the hi-fi setting. Sorry about that.Anyway, I would love any feedback at all on the two tracks I have posted there. Thank you and God bless.p.s.-I look forward to listening and reviewing all of your stuff too. go to soundclick.com/alanpowell

I like the song overall, and the drum programming's interesting. The main criticisms I'd make are concerned with the mix. I can't really hear the words at all well in the verses particularly, and this is just one of the things that makes me think that you only mixed this at high volume -- a number of things disappear when you turn it down, especially through small speakers. The build-up at 1:50 is my favourite, but the chorus then doesn't quite deliver enough. It sounds like you mixed the build-up first and only then mixed the chorus. The chorus in general doesn't lift enough for me generally. To be honest, this sounds like it has the potential to be a really, really great song if you can get the mix right. For my own preference, I might vary the chord pattern a little at points, although there are a lot of huge songs which have just gone round the same pattern. However, a single repeating pattern does tend to put a lot of strain on the mix to provide dynamics and arrangement interest. I'll listen to the other one in a moment and get back to you on that...

Just listened to the rest of the songs on your Taxi site, and there's no doubt you're a first-class singer. I also think your vocal arrangements are hot. Sonically I find myself thinking of Timberlake's latest, which I assume isn't a bad thing for what you're after. The guitars combine really well too. I still felt on a few occasions that the choruses weren't really lifting/widening enough, but I think this is only a question of mix automation tweaks, to be honest, as I like the production sound in general. Some detailed mix automation might also help keep the lead vocal more nailed exactly where you want it in the mix -- the top producers spend days on that kind of stuff. I hope you do well with this material, because there are a lot of great unusual ideas and your voice is top-notch.
