Too late for "Science" listing but...

Post by davewalton » Wed May 09, 2007 5:46 am

Howdy,I used to submit to everything under the sun but now I usually don't submit to listings unless I have a really good feel for the thing. I didn't have a good feel for the science listing and so I chose not to submit. This morning I was trolling through my "unfinished ideas" (I'm the King of Unfinished Ideas) and found an almost finished piece that, based on what I've heard here recently, might have worked for the science listing had I found it earlier.I kind of dusted this off and took an hour or so to fill in some blanks and add a little bit of polish. It's pretty simple but what do you guys think in terms of a "science/medical" listing, "space and/or planets" listing, or just general New Age?www.DaveWaltonMusic.com/MyMusic/BioWorld.mp3Thanks,Dave

Nice one Dave. Never mind the listing, lets just all release a Scientific Compilation Album Nice sounds and textures, good balance. Ahh, it takes me back to Tangerene Dream with a quadrophonic sound system in Birmingham, England about a 100 years ago. Those were the days.
It's a fine line between a thick soup and stew.

Hi Dave - JMHO - I'm still new to this! I definitely get a space / sci-fi / underwater feel, non-climatic, as well as a longer scene of research, discovery, and even documentary use. As far as the music itself I really like it. There was one small aspect of it that sounded off to me - the repeated percussive buzz / beat on the 3rd beat in the beginning of the piece . (L ear buzz followed immediately by R ear thump). To me the feel of the piece makes me "want to hear" a less accentuated first beat in this repeated set of 2 , or a more symbiotic sound between the 2 beats - right now with 2 beats getting equal emphasis in timing, and with the left / right placement of the 2 sounds, and the two tones being so different, it just didn't seem to sit in well with the rest of the song. However, in the second part of the piece where this pattern comes back, it seems to pan differently (buzz in both ears, thump in center) and it sits better and adds a cool element to the song. I could be wrong in what I think I'm hearing, but if not I hope you find this helpful and aren't groaning at my comments!

Quote:That "buzz" was the sound of a Vandergraff Generator.I think I've narrowed it down to a dog hair stuck in my wax cylinder. However, I understand what Anne means... it's something that I remember originally struggling with - leaving it out is too blank, it's a little odd leaving it in. I think that some time spent on a similar alternative is in order in the near future (thanks Anne!). DavePS - I like the "Scientific Compilation" CD (album, whatever) concept. There's enough good stuff here to probably do that.

Dave, Always good to hear your music!I kind of like the little distorted "clap" sound that echoes from left to right. You can probably find that sound and isolate it in Stylus using the edit groups function if you want to tone it down a bit or put a different effect on it, or whatever. Then again, you might just need to do some maintenance on your wax cylinder. Or shave your dog.I also like the absence of bass sounds (besides the very soft timpani), it works and would probably be a good alternative if the producers needed to leave room for some low end sound FX.I've seen that science listing twice now in the past year so I bet you'll get another shot at it with this one.John

Dave, I'm a great fan of your work, and this is no exception. It's a great piece! If any, I would agree with songwriter about the distortion on the downbeat "buzz/thumps". I don't mind the thumps as such, but it might be the distortion that makes them appear as too loud, or obtrusive. Also, I'm in favor of using subtractive synthesis for pads in order to get that warm, cozy sound. I'm not 100% sure, but the pad sounds like it's FM/digital. But this is just a personal preference of mine. And then again, targeted for this kind of category, FM based sounds are perhaps better suited. All in all, IMHO I don't think it's current state would prevent it from being forwarded to such a listing.Good job, as always!

Dave, I'm sorry... I will not allow you to usurp my throne as the "King of Unfinished Ideas"... ! I know I haven't bragged about procrastination before, but I've been putting it off. As for the song, I think it's safe to say the you blinded me with science!Science!
