Curious to know what ya think

Post by memoryfade » Wed Mar 28, 2007 9:37 am

Hey guys/gals out there in Taxi land, I like this idea of posting your own songs for your peers and others to be the ones suggestion the good/better ideas to help everyone improve. Or even if it’s just a "hey man that really sucks" we will take that as well Not sure what’s the best way to post the song but if you got time hit up the link below and let the first song play...Titled "From These Ashes" and is part of our self done promotional demo. Now before you mention the recording or mix quality keep in mind this was done in 4 days (this song and 6 others) since we had limited money & time. The master was more of myself and one other fooling around with the $99 program you can buy at the store to master your CDrs. Other then that have at it let us know what ya think. I want as many thoughts as we can get to use as improvements for when we go to re-record this and new tunes for our 12 song full length coming out this spring '07Enjoy www.memoryfade.com From These Ashesp.s. if you got time there are 7 songs total for your listen pleasure, or hell LOL

I had a listen to the first minute and a half of the first one. I coudn't listen to the others because when I tried skipping through tracks, the player stopped responding. It showed the titles of the other tracks, but the buttons did nothing. So I can only give you my opinion on the first one. This is not from a technical point of view. There are members on here that will give you a technical breakdown. Something you'll probably find useful. From what I heard, I can imagine you doing a lot of live work. I think you would probably need a good following before any major company would seriously consider signing you. I thought the song was ok. It's not something I tend to listen to much but I'm trying to be objective. I've heard music like this before, and in this style. The song didn't jump out at me as being special. Others may have different opinions, but this is mine.Major labels will offer deals for several reasons. Two of the following apply. They listen to your demo, and get blown away by your music. They send scouts to your gigs to check you out. If the songs impress them so much, then it might not even matter if you didn't gig at all.Someone tells someone in the industry that there's this really good live band, and they have a big following to their gigs and on the internet. They send scouts out. If you're good live then they will not be so bothered about fantastic songs. Still, they will expect them to be good. This is just my opinion of one of your tracks. Like I said. Others may differ. I look at things from a commercial angle. The more people like it. The more chance it's got.I think you need some great songs, to go with your sound, then you will truly be 'Kickin it'!!

Hey man ... you guys are cool! That is the first time I can remarkably say that I heard music in the hard rock edge style where the singing gets my attention. your vocals are really well done.... I can understand your diction... except the words are coming at me fast enough I need to see the lyric written to know what you are saying.... the dynamics are loud but not screaming distortion... The grind on the guitars and the bass and drums has a nice hard feel to it... it is different and very good... ArkJack

Other then that have at it let us know what ya think.Hey Memory Fade,There is a lot for me to like in your tracks but I'm biased because I'm addicted to all varieties of heavy guitar tone. Plus, I like the dark mood that you present in all your songs. But to my ears you've got a career stopping problem: the pitch issues in your vocals are distracting. Also the lead vocalist's tone doesn't have enough grit for the rest of the band or even the genre (IMHO). Now, it is possible that both of these issues could be solved: 1) pitch correction software like Melodyne or V-Vocal, and, 2) over time the vocalist's pipes & personality might mature.I can't speak to your marketability or whether your style is contemporary because - to me - everything done since 1990 sounds new. Again, there's a lot that I do like about your stuff. I'll bet you guys are great is a live band! My negative comments are just one man's opinion.-Allen

hey yall thanks alot for the recent comments and opinions.. i value everything you had to say.Jeffe - I truely like what you had to say in your post.. you honestly gave us what you think and we are right there with ya on that opinion.. this was our first attempt to at recording and the band had only been together 2 months and this was recorded in Nov '06.. well this line up as a full 5 member group.. we strive to work harder to make the songs jump out.. thank you for you opinion.. try our www.myspace.com/memoryfade site for a better player.Arkjack - Awsome that you enjoyed the songs.. come out to any shows when we come your way. As for the lyrics, well I dont know them all myself either lol, but yeah the singer wants to add them in the CD jacket on the full length album coming out this spring/summer.. wait until I can get new songs posted on here, Im sure you will like it.. Allends - THANK YOU.. yes Im going to look into those programs as I have played with them before but wasnt sure if it was a good buy. Yes the vocals need to be redone and the singer was never happy with them.. he had 5 hours to complete all 6-7 songs and the learning experience from your opinion as well as others is next time around, spend a few days on the vocals.. he does have a good range on stage but he tends to not feel cofident in the studio.. any suggestions I can send him would be great as I dont sing I am ignorant to give advice. we are smokers and I wonder if he quit that would help, but then someone mentioned if he does quit it might do more harm to his performance.. I dunno.. I say we all need to quit one day LOL..maybe siniging lessons? I know when he younger he did that but then it was 10 yrs agook done rambling and thank you guys for those post.. give me more.. lets tear these songs apart so we can go back a record a new kickass CD next month.Mike

Like I said. It was my opinion, and as you can see. Other opinions differ. If more than 50% like it then it's a good thing.Good luck. I'll keep an eye out for any other stuff you put up.

Great groove, vocals are happening, band is tight, guitar sounds are right in the genre.Unfortunately, your mastering didn't accomplish what you wanted it to. Your levels go right up to the red just like pretty much everything these days but the mix doesn't punch like other things I've heard. If you listen closely, you can hear the band ducking down everytime the vocals come in which basically sucks all the juice out of your mix. The mastering compressor is working by triggering off the loudest thing in your mix which is the vocal. One thing you could try would be to go back to your mix and buss the band to a seperate aux from the vocals and compress the band by itself. Then you can do some gain riding and ducking manually on the whole band in relation to the vocals and have more control than just putting on a mastering plug in and letting it roll. Then, I would suggest trying the mastering again with a little less aggressive settings on the compression. If you can get the mix thumping before you master, then you'll have better results, the mastering will just get your overall level up a bit and glue things together. You'll have more dynamics on the chorus and you'll get that huge sound that you're going for.The drums (besides the snare drum) sound a bit muffled and muddy.I like your band. Keep it going.Mazz

Hey Mazz yeah good info here and yes and yes.. time and more time is what we need when we record..Im trying to learn as much as I can about mastering as its always good to know as much as you can of the processes your music will need to go thru to reach that radio, professional quality.what really sucks is that we noticed the engineer did some strange EQing and Effects that muffled some of hte drums.. but when we tried to bring the drums up they would drown out other things.. compression was not out friend on this EP but a great learning experience.. I will post more songs once we get them recorded.. should be in the next month or so if we can ever get then words and melodies written LOLthanks alot you guys for the feedback.. gimmie MORE ~

I hear alot of potential. There is just no short cuts to getting the sound right. It is like working on a invisible 3 demensional puzzle that last 4 minutes. Just keep at it. The singing lessons would not hurt just get a DVD and do it on your own time. But the smoking is going to kill your sound because you wont be able to get those extreme notes and lengths.

I agree with the Here Here's!! Liked the tune deffinetley!! I would like the vocals to be a little wetter and the bass to stand out more.. Plus that backup background vocal in the chorus might sound cool with some kind of Delay/Distortion on it... could be overdone though? It gets a "Very Cool" in my book..Michael
