What's Overly Produced?

Post by k o star » Thu Aug 27, 2009 4:02 pm

I don't understand this...Need some enlightenment... What does overly produced mean?? Anyone? Thanks...Reason for return:Musical arrangement sounds overly produced in my opinion.http://www.reverbnation.com/tunepak/176 ... 803ORFresh, contemporary, current-sounding ORCHESTRAL INSTRUMENTALS are needed by the Director of Audio Products at an online Music Library/Publisher that supplies music content for media design companies. They are open to a wide array of emotions and dynamics, ranging from suspenseful to exciting and adventurous or from dark and brooding to mellow and carefree. They do welcome some type of human vocal element in the arrangement, whether it be a phrase, hook, chorus or full lyric. Great performances are essential! They want original recordings from the composer, no samples from a synth or third party. They offer a negotiated fee between $500-$750 depending on the complexity of the composition and you retain 100% of your writer's share. Very Important: You must use ProTools LE software, including all MIDI data, to record your instrumentals, as that's the format they need the compositions to be delivered in (per their instructions). If you don't use ProTools LE, please do not submit to this listing. Please include your information about this in your bio. Broadcast quality needed [great sounding home recordings are OK]. Please submit one to three songs online or per CD, include lyrics (if applicable). All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS ONLY - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI. Submissions must be received no later than Monday, August 3, 2009. TAXI #Y090803OR

I translate that as being 'too busy'. I think there are good elements in this piece but they need to be worked so everything isn't coming at the listener at once. Particularly the synth sound, it seems to cover the other elements. I'd work on panning all the tracks out well, backing some things off and flowing in and out with different elements.HTH

Thanks so much Vikki... What U said makes perfect sense... I've got a lot to think about in terms of my approach to producing & mixing these Hybridizing Orchestra parts... am striving to improve upon this side of the craft so deeply appreciate the feedback! Working on the panning & space-alizing things out...-Kel

Hey Kel!Yeah, that's what I translate it to mean too (what Vikki said), although I like your piece, and I didn't necessarily think it was "overly produced". I thought it was COOL. But I guess COOL doesn't cut it in this game. But I have tried to take the (as quoted by Mazz) "less is more" approach lately. When it comes to these orchestrations & things, I'll try not to have too much goin' on all at once. Then you hafta' change your thinking just a little. I think they just want you/us ta' "keep it simple" to some degree. The simpler, the better. Least that's my take on it.But the tune itself was "SLAMMIN'". So you get an "A" for effort, as far as I'm concerned. ibanez468
