Can't Believe this Rejection
Wow. I was so sure this was on target and well-produced and recorded. Both pieces in this montage have been previously forwarded for a number of action listings. The mini (checkbox) critique said the recording was not broadcast quality and the pieces were not on target. Really? I don't get it. Anyone care to weigh in? (Listing description below.)http://www.richardemmet.com/WiredRumble.mp3 Richardwww.richardemmet.comD090204INORCHESTRAL ACTION INSTRUMENTAL COMPOSERS are sought by an established Film Composer who is joining forces with a well-known/veteran Music Supervisor to create a production music catalog for Film and TV. They are not looking to license tracks but are hoping to find talent that they can commission new work from. They are looking to collaborate with composers who have excellent programming skills, the newest sample libraries and a commanding knowledge of their own sounds and techniques to the point where they can turn around a complex assignment quickly. IMPORTANT: For this particular listing, they want to hear examples of high impact orchestral action cues which may be mixed with percussion and choir. You can submit the action cues as a montage not to exceed 5 minutes in length. Please submit 1-3 montages/tracks online or per CD, include bio. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI - and must be received no later than Noon (PST) on Wednesday, February 4, 2009. TAXI #D090204IN

Re: Can't Believe this Rejection
Hey Richard, I enjoyed this piece quite a bit. It has a lot of energy and excitement. It's well orchestrated and produced. I did find the fast string lines sounded a bit thin, almost too midi sounding. But that's really nit-picky as the overall track is superb.I got the impression when I read the dispatches that choral parts were a key part of what they were looking for. Stuff along the line of John Williams and Howard Shore. That's the only thing I can think of why this could have been rejected.Steve

Re: Can't Believe this Rejection
Richard,IMHO the broadcast quality thing is debatable, I think this *could* be forwarded although it's not a slam dunk, mostly due to the somewhat synthetic sounding string runs Steve already mentioned and the lack of dynamics in the brass.Stylistically, the first piece is more on target although it gets a bit off the action vibe with that piccolo theme at the end. I think the second piece is what puts this montage off target, as it has a prominent (intentional) synthetic element to it which this listing was not looking for...more of a hybrid orchestral approach where this listing is looking for straight orchestral pieces with the possible addition of percussion and or chior. My 2 c...

I think you should just take a minute and be proud that you have written such an excellent piece of music. It is so hard to figure out what the listing is asking for. Actually its just BS. And with this listing it sounds like they don't really care about the actual piece of music but rather the creator. I agree with you.Keith

Like you, I thought the point was to demonstrate competence with your tools and the ability to create in a certain style, not to sell a particular piece of music. I guess I didn't pass the audition this time. Oh well, there will be other opportunities.Richard

Hi Richard,I could be dead wrong, but when I first read this listing I had an intuition that to win a forward on this one would be like finding true love on a blind date: The listing party seems to be looking for compatibility for a lasting relationship.I wouldn't sweat it. I wouldn't recommend trying to understand members of the opposite gender either. Allen

I guess this relationship was not meant to be, although I did submit a couple of other pieces to the same suitors for their "lyrical" listing. The timeless words of W. Shakespeare spring to mind at moments like these (with some minor tinkering): To forward or not to forward. That is the question.Richard
