Contradiction?

Post by marnold » Thu Dec 06, 2007 10:00 pm

My most recent failure is this: a rejected country submission that apparently sounded too much like Steely Dan, according to the critique. Well, there was a posting for "Steely Dan" type music not long ago, and that same song was rejected. I give up!!!

Their telephone number is 1-800-458-2111. No point in posting here if you haven't talked to Customer Service first. You could also read this threadhttp://taxi.proboards27.com/index.cgi?bo....read=10752438352) Can you please post the listing, a link to the song, and the entire critique if you have one. Folks here will try to help you understand what's going on.http://taxi.proboards27.com/index.cgi?b ... 0739477173) We've all had our share of returns. If you "give up" on a song after two submissions then consider it all failure. If you'll hang in there and listen to those around here who have turned that same frustration into success, then there is more than hope, you CAN succeed at this.Wishing you well,Aub

Well, there was a posting for "Steely Dan" type music not long ago, and that same song was rejected. I give up!!!The other thought I'd offer is that it might have sounded too much like Steely Dan to be a country song but not enough like Steely Dan for a Steely Dan submission. I'm no expert in this stuff; in fact, I haven't even started on this submission road yet. But I can say that I've heard many songs (particularly this year) at the Road Rally that are a mix of styles. It would be hard to call them one thing or another because they have musical "cues" from various styles, sort of like my language teacher in college, Dr. Buzzard (her real name!)Dr. Buzzard spoke English with a collection of accents she had picked up over the years as she moved from place to place and added to her vocabulary. One word would have a Texas accent, the next a New York, the next a British RP accent, the next a German tinge. It was impossible to tell where she was from, but it was always clear she was not from "here"... no matter where "here" was. I haven't heard your song, so I can't say that this applies, but it's a possibility. Sometimes we inadvertently layer different musical accents into the same piece and it throws everyone off. Style cues can be subtle sometimes.People who know a style inside and out can spot a false cue in an instant. Not all of them can explain what's wrong, but they'll hear what's wrong and point to the spot. If you're lucky, they can actually put what's wrong into words.

If the critique said that then it is clearly a gaff on Taxi's partYou can't have one screener saying it is like steely dan and another returning it for not sounding like steely dan.
