Vague Listing?

Post by jlizerbram » Wed Oct 28, 2009 9:57 am

Quote:D091021INSERIOUS INSTRUMENTAL COMPOSERS who write PERIOD type INSTRUMENTALS needed by a Music Producer who is creating a new independent music library and already has several TAXI composers under his roof. Period pieces can range from Medieval to Renaissance to Ancient Civilization to 1800’s to 1900’s, etc. Instrumentals ONLY! He is currently the provider of music for a huge daytime television talk show but wants to make clear that the Composers he signs to the library will focus on the other projects he is involved in and will not compete with the Composers working on the talk show. You MUST be able to work as a team player, take direction and deliver on time. He is open to both domestic and international writers. He needs someone who uses high quality samples and has state-of-the-art equipment. He’s definitely looking for a “pro” and not someone who works during the day, as he’ll need you to be available for quick turnaround assignments and same day edits when necessary. He’d like someone with experience with syncing to tape. His deal offer is non-exclusive (except with other libraries) and you keep 100% of the writer’s share. We ran this as a broader listing #Y090817IN in the July 1st set of regular listings and now he wants to hear specific genres. If you submitted to the referenced listing, please send in new material this time around. All submissions need to be Broadcast Quality. Please submit two to three instrumentals online or per CD, include Bio. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI - and must be received no later than 2:00pm (PST) on Wednesday, October 21, 2009. TAXI #D091021INI sent to this listing one of my "epic" genre orchestral instrumentals, 'cause wasn't sure how to exactly target this one. It got returned with the following comment:"Don't quite see what era or period this is supposed to evoke."Funny thing is, I'm not sure what era or period I was even trying for! I kinda did a Hail Mary pass to this listing, I suppose!Anyways, does anyone have advice on how to better target listing such as these, when they "specifically" ask for a "broad" range of music?Oh, if you want the mp3 for reference, just let me know.Jeff

Period pieces are hard, you have to put your ethnomusicologist/music historian cap on and on top of that deliver a solid track! When I see a broad range like this I try to pick one of the examples and nail it. For example Medieval (or) Renaissance, rather than (to).Anyway, hope that helps.-Mark

That does sure help Mark. Thanks. I was just reading brindabella's thread (a few threads down from this as of today) about misleading or not clear enough...not that this one was that unclear (more that I misinterpreted it), but what an interesting read!

Mark's right on the approach. This listing was looking to fill very specific categories, the key word here being "Period". So the pieces had to clearly sound like one of the major categories from those time periods. Not modern takes or combinations of those categories.HTH'sB

I would read it to mean that your piece needs to have a) an understanding of the music conventions of the time, b) sound authentic to the instrumentation of the time. For example, I had accepted for this, a medieval style composition played by two recorders.

Jeff that was probably the thread I got hot under the collar on(LOL)! BTW on that one I was totally wrong cause I didn't realize that sometimes our stuff is actually screened by the listing party.-Mark

Period piece, Baroque. Love this period and have a few neo ones, but for this one he wanted authentic sounding, meaning style and instruments. No comparison with that "other" listing. He was clear on what he wanted.http://www.taximusic.com/stream/272389/Baroquiana.mp3
