Syncing to Tape...
Here's the listing:----SERIOUS INSTRUMENTAL COMPOSERS are needed by a Music Producer who is creating a new independent music library and already has several TAXI composers under his roof. He is looking for composers IN ALL GENRES and said no stone will be left unturned in that respect. Although he is the provider of music for a huge daytime television talk show, he wants to make it clear that the composers he is looking to sign to the library will focus on other projects he is working on and will not compete with the composers working on the talk show. You must be able to work as a team player, take direction and deliver on time. He needs someone who uses high quality samples and has state-of-the-art equipment. He's definitely looking for a "pro" and not someone who works during the day, as he'll need you to be available for quick turnaround assignments and same day edits when necessary. He'd like someone with experience with syncing to tape. His deal offer is non-exclusive (except with other libraries) and you keep 100% of the writer's share. All submissions need to be Broadcast Quality. Please submit two to three instrumentals online or per CD, include Bio. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI - and must be received no later than Monday, August 17, 2009. TAXI # Y090817IN ---------I have NO experience with this at all. Should I attempt the listing, or would this be a show stopper?

Re: Syncing to Tape...
Does syncing to tape mean syncing sound to visual digitally? Are they the same thing?I'm unsure abt this portion too but am really tempted to go for this one cos I do consider myself a serious instrumental composer & I have a feeling this producer is looking for more genres for his library... I have a very good feeling abt this one...I would say Go For It yea!!!-Kel

Re: Syncing to Tape...
It's rare that anyone "syncs to tape" these days. He may mean "score to picture" and "has the technical chops to score to Quicktime video and deliver a finished mix or stems". In any case, these two skills are important for a composer these days.Mazz

imagine if John Williams and Trent Reznor met at Bernard Hermann's for lunch and Brian Eno was the head chef!

Re: Syncing to Tape...
Ya know, I really don't know if anyone actually does this anymore. Used to be, there was time code on the film, given the picture was shot using film. I'm thinking the time code ( one of several SMPTE specs ) was fed out to audio equipment as a clock for use in syncing to the frame rate.Back when we had audio tape with multiple tracks we would stripe one track with SMPTE and feed that to a sequencer to sync up various synths with our audio. This has largely disappeared unless the big recording studios still use tape. I think some of them still have that capability. At any rate, there IS an offset in the timing intended to allow tape/film motor some time to spin up to speed.Hope this helps!Keith

But I certainly remember the era of striping the multitrack recorder with timecode and syncing the sequencer and video machine to it. Glad those days are mostly gone. (Although I'm not a wild fan of QT either.Richard

Re: Syncing to Tape...
I actually used to regenerate the time code off of the 24 track and record it on to my Fostex 8 track and then sync my sequencer up to it (Mac Classic 2 running Performer!) and do synth arrangements. When we synced the sequencer up to the 24 track back at the studio, everything went down perfectly. It worked well, but I'm not willing to go back there again!!I actually really like QT, but I always insist on a window burn (Visual Time Code). Having the visual time code and what frame rate their using makes life so much easier!!BTW: Great avatar pic, Richard!! If I had a pic with me and FZ, I'd be using it too!! There's not too many out there that have a picture like that!! Very cool!Mazz

Re: Syncing to Tape...
I was wondering about this too so I'm glad you asked the question, Wings. I have no experience of any of this stuff (that I can remember... ha ha!) but I'm going to submit anyhow. In the unlikely event that I'm forwarded AND contacted, I'll deal with it then. (Probably by coming to you guys to ask for help! Ha ha) Georgie
