1F/1R - Similar Listings - Same Song

Post by dpenn » Mon Dec 22, 2008 10:06 am

Hey Everyone - Normally I can figure out why a song was forwarded or returned, but this one has me a bit perplexed. The song below was submitted to both of the following listings. The first listing was a forward and the second a return. They're both extremely similar in nature - the only primarly difference is that the first seems to be "theme" music and the other "highlight." I would think if a song was good enough for a theme it would be good enough for a highlight in the same genre??? Any feedback would be most appreciated!!!DaveFORWARD:SPORTS INSTRUMENTALS that range from NFL, NBA, Fox Sports, ESPN, etc. theme songs to Extreme Sports/X-Games tracks are needed by a Production Music Library. For this one, you can submit material in a wide range of approaches but the energy level must be high and the adrenaline behind the music must be current-sounding, compelling & marketable. This company needs a wide variety of material that could be appropriate for a Major Network Sports special, as well as material that could rise to the energy of the edgy/adrenaline-pumping X-Games. Everything from high-energy/cutting edge Orchestral/Rock blends to Pop/Punk to Hard Rock to Electronica could work. For this listing, the overall tone and the level of the performance/production are the key factors. The energy must be high! This is a Broadcast Quality listing (great home recordings should be fine). Please submit one to three instrumentals online or per CD. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI and must be received by October 20, 2008. TAXI #S081020TVRETURN:HIGH ACTION/SPORTS INSTRUMENTALS for various Film/TV placements are wanted by a very successful Production Music Library who has placements with ABC, CBS, NBC, WB, Disney, Discovery, Lifetime, Fox, USA and more. These instrumentals can be in a variety of styles, but they must sound current and contemporary. You'll want to think of sports highlights, exciting features of extreme sports, adrenaline-pumping advertisements, etc. If you take an orchestral approach here, it's suggested that it be blended with current-sounding instruments with "edge". These tracks need to be compelling dynamically, without a lot of motive/melodic repetition. Variation and momentum/build will be key for this one! Broadcast quality is necessary, though excellent home recordings should be fine. Please submit 1-3 Instrumentals online or per CD. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI - and must be received no later than November 20, 2008. I think the thing that may have got you on the return was the "without a lot of motive/melodic repetition" and "Variation and momentum/build will be key for this one".Your piece is good but it repeats the melody a few times and pretty much starts out at one level and stays there. I think it fits the "high action" part of the listing but doesn't fit the musical specs they laid out. It's a good piece. The trick is, of course, targeting the piece to the listing.Just my 2cMazzPS: The reason they want a lot of variation in the second one might be so they can cut their footage to the music, and music with a lot of variety gives them a lot of options to make cool dramatic edits. For a theme, they probably want something more repetitive that sticks in someone's head and is recognizable the next time it comes on. It would probably be featured and the other one would be in the background more, possibly with a voice over it.Just some more thoughts!

Dave, my guess would be that on the listing that got returned, since it was a Yes/No listing, that perhaps the client themselves did the screening and the song for whatever reason, didn't move them the way it did the screener in the first listing???Hope that helps,- Big Blue

TAXI #Y081120SITHE SONG: SPEEDFREAKhttp://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_id=1791 ... am=trueYou forgot to mention that the "winner", the person with the answer that makes the most sense, wins an order of "Chicken Vindaloo with Chatpata Rice" next Road Rally. I'm pretty hungry already so here it goes...General items. #1 has a lower bar than #2 because #1 is pretty much open for anything and #2 has some very specific requirements, the most important of which are:"Variation and momentum/build will be key for this one!"I'm not a screener so I can cheat. I listen to the first 10 seconds and the last 10 seconds... hmm... they're the same. Well, since "variation/build" was the key... BZZZZZZ (the sound of the "return" buzzer). I can smell the Indian spices already. There may be other reasons or none others and this song may fit the criteria in every other respect but... that one thing is critical. They wanted this thing to start big and end way bigger and different than the beginning. As far as variation... I can't remember who posted this (you guys/gals will have to help me) but there's a track posted recently called "First One To Win" which has a LOT of variation and when listening to only the first 10 seconds and the last 10 seconds... the last 10 seconds are jumping all over the place in a way that really strikes a contrast to the way it started (which was big in and of itself). Whoever has a link... this would be a good track to listen to for this kind of thing. I don't know if it was submitted for this but I'd eat my hat (after I finish that Indian food) if that track were submitted but not forwarded.Anyway, that's my guess. Feed the poor, Dave

Is there any consolation prize for finding the song that Dave W. mentioned and putting a link to it in this thread???? http://taxi.proboards27.com/index.cgi?a ... 26&page=1- Big Blueps - no surprise that the song got forwarded when you see that B. Flat wrote it! That dude rocks!

Hey Mazz - Thanks for taking the time to evaluate - I appreciate it! Yeah - I totally see what you're saying, and I agree. Also - very good points re background vs. theme. I think I just became complacent with Extreme Sports listings in general since I the second I would see "Extreme Sports" I would submit my "go-to" cues and usually get the forwards. Well...not this time!!! Good wakeup call - gotta study those listings!!! Dave

Thanks Big B!!!And as far as the consolation prize goes...hmmm.....I bestow on you good Curry Karma (I acquired it during the Rally - Mr. Walton is well versed in it as well ). Will explain the enlightened nature of it at another time (trying to post while at work is an art in itself )

Hey Dave - Yep - agreed. I'll check that track out when I get home. Guess I didn't feed the poor enough to land an "F" on this one. Oh well - maybe if I splurge on some Vindaloo tonight I'll get my mojo working again Dave
