How uptempo is uptempo?

Post by flyingtadpole » Fri Sep 12, 2008 11:26 pm

The $5 question Quote:TAXI # Y081009JZUPTEMPO, SOLO PIANO JAZZ INSTRUMENTALS are needed by an established Music Publisher in Los Angeles. ... - the piano should be the ONLY instrument present in the recording. Only uptempo pieces will be considered for this one. ...- and must be received no later than October 9, 2008.So, how uptempo are they after? I have one to clean up at 178 BPM (blues for Laurel, live on http://www.youtube.com/flyingtadpole ) that fits any sane person's ideas of uptempo on a piano. But what about 130 BPM in a jog-along sort of way? It ain't downtempo, but is it uptempo? Any suggestions on what point Uptempo and downtempo become neitherupnordowntempo?(It's easy to see I'm not a jazzman...)

Well, I think this piece is uptempo enough, but I wonder if it's jazzy enough? I wonder, what do they mean by jazz piano? Is it just uptempo standard jazz or can you mix other influences? I have a solo piano jazz samba song, I wonder if that's okey?

They wave no "a la"s in the call, so that leaves an enormous range. Irving Berlin, Mancini, Thelonius Monk, that strange indecipherable progressive stuff, see the Genre Description for Jazz that the Jazz listings link to......so unless someone out of taxi tells me different, I can but throw things in and see what happens. Pity it's a Y listing. I'm working cleaning up a jogalong which I originally wrote as a lead in to "Glendora" (Perry Como sang. Yes I know, don't tell me) which is ?uptempo tho' not fast hence the query. Don't see why a piano jazz samba wouldn't fit, neither.
