Haunting Music - feedback please

Post by stevebarden » Sun Jul 20, 2008 9:01 am

I would love some feedback on this piece for the Haunting Music listing. I opted to not include the "slight overtones of Arabic music", however. Not sure about Mulholland Drive, but I know for sure that there was no Arabic in any of the Twin Peaks score! I know I'm taking a chance that way, but is it still haunting? I do have a little time to make some adjustments.HAUNTING MUSIC IN ANY GENRE/STYLE -- similar to the soundtrack for the film "Mulholland Drive" -- is needed by an established Independent Music Publisher. This Publisher has tons of Film/TV placements and has signed dozens of TAXI writers. He is open to any genre or style, as long as the overall tone and mood is haunting. Another reference might be "Twin Peaks", but he's not looking for music quite as quirky as what's in that film. He'd like to hear slight overtones of Arabic music, similar to the soundtracks that have been referenced above. Songs with vocals and instrumentals will both be considered. Excellent performances are necessary and the recordings must be broadcast quality. The President of this company will be screening the submissions himself. This company splits the license fee with you 40/60 [that 60% is for you] and doesn't take any publishing. Please submit one to three songs online or per CD. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS -- NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI -- and must be received by July 23, 2008. I really liked your piece! But for this one you should really go for some dark strings I think. I have submitted 2 pieces myself for this one. Maybe you should submit this one for the piano listing?

I was thinking about the "new" listing. ORIGINAL SOLO PIANO INSTRUMENTALS a la George Winston, David Lanz, etc. are needed by a Production Music Library/Publisher that focuses on placing music in video games, interactive web sites, etc. They're looking for the same kind of sweeping melodies and sweet arrangements that one would hear on a George Winston or David Lanz collection. Songs and arrangements can range from thick to sparse, sweetly subtle or exciting -- but the performance needs to be excellent and the material needs to be compelling.I don't know exactly, but you could compare this one to some of their works.

Hi Steve,I know the date for this listing has passed already but I have to say something. This piece is very well written. I really hope you entered it. I would definitely describe it as haunting. I think it's awesome how the chord progression keeps surprising me. I really enjoy this piece! It is beautiful!~ Lydia

Yes, in spite of the contrary suggestions about what is haunting, I did submit it. I am taking a chance, but hey, it's only five bucks, right? Understanding what a listing is asking for is an ongoing battle. Although it asks for "haunting" (what is haunting, anyway?) the consensus seems to be "low dark strings" because the comparisons are of the Mulholland Drive score.Anyway, thanks for the nice words.Steve

You're welcome! Hopefully you'll have some good news in a couple of weeks... I also entered a piano piece as well as a string piece. These were my first submissions so I am nervous and excited. (but I guess that may never change - I'll probably feel the same way when I have submitted 100 pieces...)~ Lydia

Well, you'll never know! It is a nice piece, and I think you should submit it to the piano listing as well. Double your chances!
