Big Orchestral Video Game Music

Post by stevebarden » Fri May 23, 2008 6:19 am

There are two listings that seem almost identical. They're basically looking for "big orchestral" and "dramatic". The wording only differs slightly. I'm guessing they are both for the same company. It seems to me you could kill two birds with one stone by just submitting to either one of them. No? Opinions?NEW LISTING -- INSTRUMENTAL/ORCHESTRAL COMPOSERS are needed by a Leading Video Game Developer of DS and Wii game titles. They need someone who can write a wide variety of Instrumentals as background music for future video games projects for the Wii game console. Musically, they'd like to hear a scope in style but are very interested in a dramatic, "big" orchestral feel. Many dynamic shifts and tone variation would be advisable, to show your full capabilities. They are looking for professional composers who have experience arranging and are responsible with meeting deadlines. It's also a plus to know the tech side of programming music with video game operations. Not only are they looking for freelance composers, but they are open to hiring you as a full time staff composer if they feel you are right for a particular game project. You must also be a "team player." Broadcast quality needed [excellent home recordings are OK]. Please submit two to three INSTRUMENTAL pieces online or per CD, include your bio. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS -- NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI -- and must be received no later than June 13, 2008.TAXI # Y080613VGNEW LISTING -- BIG DRAMATIC ORCHESTRAL INSTRUMENTALS are needed by a Leading Video Game Developer of DS and Wii game titles. They are hoping to expand their catalog of music, and are needing a wide variety of Dramatic Orchestral Instrumentals as background music for future video games projects for the Wii game console. The style can range from suspense to excitement/adventure, from dark/brooding to happy/mellow -- a wide range of emotions and dynamics are recommended for this. Broadcast quality needed [excellent home recordings are OK]. Please submit one to three INSTRUMENTAL pieces online or per CD. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS -- NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI -- and must be received no later than June 30, 2008.TAXI # Y080630VGSteve

The first one is actually looking for composers, while the second is just looking for songs No reason why you can't submit the same things for both though.Dan

Yeah, I agree with daniel481. They do seem very similar in description, but they are 2 totally different listings, as daniel481 mentioned. At least that's how I'm interpreting it. Plus, the listing numbers are different, but are very close, if you don't look at them carefully (Y080613VG & Y080630VG). daniel481 says: "No reason why you can't submit the same things for both though." Sounds like a good idea!I-468

Wouldn't submitting music of that type make me a "composer" as well???It just seems like these listings were created by the "Department of Redundancy Dept."

There is a VAST difference between these two listings. The first one is asking for a Composer to write music to hire as a staff composer - "They need someone who can write a wide variety of Instrumentals as background music for future video games projects for the Wii game console." Ergo, you need to have the skills & the tools to deliver on assigned jobs and meet the deadlines. You are applying for a job.The second listing is looking for broadcast quality Instrumentals that have already been created. "They are hoping to expand their catalog of music, and are needing a wide variety of Dramatic Orchestral Instrumentals as background music for future video games projects for the Wii game console." That means they are looking for pieces of music for their library. Ergo, existing pieces already composed. You are pitching your music for their library.Hope that clears things up.H

Exactly as the 'Bird said. And yes, you are a composer either way But, while you can submit the same material for both as I mentioned, it would simply be used as an audition of sorts for the first listing, while it would be considered for the company's own music library in the second. Based on getting forwarded, of course. Dan

Thanks for everybody's interpretation! I guess it takes a while to get used to the style of writing (and reading between the lines!) when perusing these listings.Steve
