oh, just an observation

Post by hummingbird » Thu Mar 20, 2008 8:17 am

This ain't a rant, just an observation. I'd dearly love to submit to this listing, but I cannot because I don't live in the United States. I don't see what earthly difference it makes, it's not like I live on another continent. I live 20 miles from the border. I think it's funny that Canada is considered "international". I would never think of the States as being "international". When I buy postage, there's stamps for Canada, stamps for the United States, and stamps for 'international'. I know there's nothing anyone can do, but it is a little frustrating to not have the opportunity to submit. DANCE/ELECTRONICA/HOUSE INSTRUMENTAL COMPOSERS needed by the Music Supervisor for a popular daytime talk show. This listing has run in the regular listings already(S080317DA), but the need has become quite urgent. All submissions will be evaluated equally, but he'd like to hear some choices now - in addition to the regular submissions that will be sent to him shortly. He has several TAXI composers under his roof already and has had hundreds of placements on this show in the last year. He needs someone who can write a wide variety of Dance/Electronica Instrumentals as background music for the show's stories, profiles, and vignettes. You should also have top-of-the-line software and samples on hand and represented in your submissions. He'd like someone with experience scoring and sync-ing to film/TV [though not necessary] and who has high speed internet service at home/studio [this IS necessary]. You must also be based in the United States -- he cannot work with international composers for this particular project. It is vital that you are responsible with deadlines and are able to deliver on time. You must also be a "team player". He's not interested in someone who has a huge ego and will be difficult to work with. Since your TAXI submissions will not be used for the show [if chosen, you'll instead write original pieces], Master Quality is preferred -- he wants to hear what you can do. Please submit one to three 1:30-2:00 INSTRUMENTAL pieces online or per CD, include your bio. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI - and must be received no later than Noon PST on Monday, Mar. 24, 2008. TAXI #D080324DA

I read it and felt exactly the same way V. Maybe you don't need to tell them you're in Canada. OTOH, maybe it's a US tax thing. Maybe Oprah's keeping out da foreigners...Quote:This ain't a rant, just an observation. I'd dearly love to submit to this listing, but I cannot because I don't live in the United States. This is just a guess but being the huge show that it is and she being the big celebrity that she is, they may face much scrutiny from unions and such; that is probably the reason. While they are not asking for people in the US to belong to a union, I know SAG and DGA look unfavorably on TV/film productions that do not use union labor or outsource to foreign countries (with the assumption that the only possible reason for doing that is to save a couple of bucks, they couldn't possibly be doing that because there are talented people in other parts of the world ). So while it may not be a legal limitation, they may do that to avoid any negative publicity.Or as it has happened in the past, I may be completely wrong.Antonio

I guess my posting of this this might contravene the "You must also be a "team player". He's not interested in someone who has a huge ego and will be difficult to work with." but really, Mr Music Supervisor, you don't know what you're missing

I have a feeling that the supervisor's hands might be tied on this one by the client (who has tons and tons of clout). Due to the way the royalties are handled, they might only want to deal with US composers. This is just a guess on my part, though, so it might be worth a call to TAXI to find out.

Same feelings here in the UK and probably Europe. It's a bit of a kick in the teeth not being at least eligible for Taxi's most prestigious listing!Probably should add that all of these TV shows are accessible in the UK.I have even been known to watch Judge Judy!!!!!

Hey VTC (Vikki The Canadian) Two things...You don't really know it's for Oprah (I don't think that's a known fact).I think you should call TAXI about the international thing and if that includes Canada as well as "over the pond". Casey

CaseyI didn't say who it was for, just posted the listing. There are many daytime talk shows.Good idea re the international thingy, Mazz & Casey. Except - the listing does say "you must be based in the United States."That's okay. I'll just go and quietly work on American Idol songs
