Listing D0801229SR
Hey there...here is my submission for the listing D0801229SR. This listing asked for a song that was lyrically similar to "Can't You See" by Marshall Tucker, while possibly referenceing several other roosty southern rock bands musically. Forgive me if I have posted this in the wrong spot...I'm still learning the forum's ins and outs and etiquette etc.... Anyway, the plan was to get your reviews before actually submitting, but ran low on time so went ahead and sent it in. There's still time today if anyone hears something glaringly obvious that would prevent this from getting forwarded and could be easily fixed. Though there is this darn inconvenient thing called "work" i have to do today, I could make some time to re-do something quick. To listen, go to my taxi page www.taxi.com/leejohnson and check out "Yes I'm Free". This is a song I wrote and recorded for this listing, in attempt to capture the sound and vibe of the original song "Can't You See" but without getting too close. I had a version that was more like a copy of the original and thanks to some feedback here in forum land, I re-wrote and re-recorded with musical changes suffcient enough to be considerably different, while still attempting to reproduce that original feel and vibe. Let me know how I did.ThanksLee

Lee,I really liked your song. Don't know the original, so I can't judge fully, but I think you probably got it right. It seems to have the right vibe and feel. Good luck with it!I sent you an email.Dean

Hi Dean, thanks for listening. Currently I don't really write this kind of thing so much...it's like a blast from the past for me as I grew up listening to southern rock and blues etc...so i was really trying to capture that vibe on the original tune "Can't You See". For me thats taking me back to playing bars in my young 20's when I had long hair and thought I was gonna be the next Greg Allman. Kinda fun to revisit, but the vocal thing makes your voice hurt after a while! Maybe those guys drank so much whiskey they didn't notice. Its probably improper techinque to try to be gravelly and throaty, so I normally sing cleaner today. This was just for this listing! I'll respond thru email also. Thanks for contacting me!Lee

Sounds like you have captured the vibe of the song...good luck with it!I tried my hand at this one...I felt the key was a little high and the mix on the vocals a little too "current" sounding, but with dispatch, time is of the essence!http://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_ ... ream=1Good luck with your tune!

Hi B.Flat...I like your version. Came out great. I was originally doing something staying more on the /d/c/g/d/ thing too, but was worried it may be too close. Anyways, let me know how you did when you find out. I have always wondered if there is a way to find out what ends up getting the listing and if we can hear it? That would help a ton.CheersLee

yeah, I stayed away from the G and hit the F to change it up...close, but not exact.

Hey Lee, Just had a quick listen. IMO good enough for a forward, but hard to tell what they "really" want. In some instances they are looking for almost knock offs (the kind that make you think you are listening to the actual song. If they don't want it that close then you have a good shot. If I had to pick something to pick on... I would say that your song sounds more like a rocker then how I remember "can't you see". CYS sort of leans towards a southern rock power ballad (if there is such a thing) where your song leans more southern/classic rock. It's impossible to know what characteristics from CYS they are looking for, so I am curious to know how it goes.Good Luck!

Hey ddusty, thanks for taking a listen. I agree with ya on the Classic Southern Rock vibe rather than southern rock ballad. I originally was going with a real close knock off of Can't You See. However then i got some advice from the forum here that suggested if the chords and melody were too close, there could be copyright issues. I was almost done with my 1st version, but decided to go back and re-do it, starting from scratch, with a couple days til deadline. I should have submitted both versions. Ah well, we learn a little something new every time ehhh? Maybe they'll be looking for something like what i came up with, and I think in the future I'll make 2 versions...a real close knock off and one a little more out there. Anyone got thoughts on that? Does anyone try that...any success?
