Quote:Do you think there is a big advantage to EW/QL Gold over silver? Have you heard of Synful Orchestra? I did the 15 day trial of that. I havent tried any of EW/QL stuff before.RichIf you're going to be doing more music like "From The Beginning" (which sounds pretty darn good, BTW), you'd definitely want Gold. If you're just adding strings and maybe some sparse instruments to tracks like "Aliya" then Silver would do just fine. The Steinway B piano comes in both packagesThe difference is that Gold is chromatically sampled and has natural ambience recorded in with the sample. Right out of the box it sounds great. Gold has a mind-numbing number of articulations for each instrument section and solo instruments.Silver isn't chromatically sampled (like maybe every 5 notes or something like that), doesn't have natural ambience so it's dry as a bone and you have to do your own reverb. There are fewer articulations. Still, it sounds very good. Here's a short piece with Silver (when I first got it)www.DaveWaltonMusic.com/MyMusic/CliffsByTheSea.mp3And a short piece with Gold (when I first got it)www.DaveWaltonMusic.com/MyMusic/TensionAndTerror.mp3I couldn't have done the second piece with Silver because although it has the short bow stroke articulations for the violins and basses, etc, it doesn't have the french horn rips and some of the brass articulations necessary to make those sounds. The drums are Stormdrum so don't count those.Either way though, depending on how you use it, they're a great deal. Personally I see you as a "Gold" guy.

Quote:How did this get forwarded for this listing if the deadline for submission is Monday Jan. 7th?Romantic listing? I thought this was the "softer" downtempo/chill/ambient track he was going to do for me. (Dave whacking Chuck on the head with a rolled up newspaper)...The title says something about sad piano, so perhaps it was forwarded, not for the romantic listing in the future, but for the sad listing in the past?

Thanks Dave. I really appreciate your input on this as I have been wrestling with justifying a purchase of these packages. I'm just kind of starting to get things going with some new material and I keep getting drawn to orchestral arrangements, even though I'm probably not qualified to do so, but its a lot of fun to do. I like Mark Isham's stuff quite a bit and I kind of shoot for that kind of a target, while a bit lofty.

I have used the Bosendorfer 290 that Dave mentioned and it's a bit confusing at first. You have to load the multis otherwise you're just getting part of the program. It's not clear in the documentation. There's patches that say "dry 16 layer", etc. Those are the ones to use. I actually like that library a lot.My favorite sampled piano right now is the Sampletekk Seven Seas Grand. It's a Yamaha 7 foot Conservatory Grand (7CG, get it?). It has an amazing 31 velocity layers per note!! With a good controller, it feels as close to a real Yamaha as I have experienced. Yes, nothing compares to a really nice 7 foot Kawai unless you don't have room (or good mics and so on) for it. In my experience, the Sampletekk is really great (does need Kontakt, though).Ivory sounds very nice too and the Italian Grand I heard at the Rally is a great addition. I think overall it's strength is the convolution reverb.Sorry I can't listen to your piece right now (technical issues with a firewall) but if Dave likes it then you're doing great!Cheers,Mazz

Quote:I listened to Matto's tracks that Dave provided and I can totally hear the difference. I'm thinking that I'm not using Ivory correctly. I tried the Italian Grand at the Rally too and loved it. Definitely don't give up on Ivory too quickly...listen to stick's two tracks in this post http://taxi.proboards27.com/index.cgi?b ... 1199411557 which were done with the Ivory Steinway. Sounds pretty good to me...

All fake pianos sound fake to meIF you use one though I recommend MOTU symphonic. It's only $250 and you get all the other stuff too.The realest sounding one by far, IMHO, is GIGA Piano. But it does not work for everything.
