sucks

Post by wattywatts » Thu Mar 15, 2007 6:45 pm

OK, so heres what I want to bitch about concerning the taxi listings. Before i joined up I read some crap about how the best way to make it was to hit the road and gig till you got somewhere, and I was thinking, "yeah, but who can put their life on hold to do that?", which was convenient, because that was the just of the next sentence. So theres where TAXI comes is right, they bring the industry to you and all that. Well, yes they do, and it's great, but heres my little rant:Almost all the rock artist listings ask for groups who have extensive fan bases or have toured. Thats it. Get it? I don't know, maybe that only sounds idiotic to me, but I've said my peace.toodles

I'm not saying that's fair, I'm just saying that's the way things work.

You mentioned putting your life on hold, but I don't think you can hold onto another life if you want to make it in music (unless you want to be a part timer as many great artists are). Record companies want someone who is completely dedicated and has a track record. You sound frustrated, I don't blame you, this is a crazy unfair business. But if you want to be in it, stay strong.Nomi

This topic header 'sucks.' Coz when you're the last person to post and it shows the last updated topic in the listings section, it will say something like "jchitty (in) sucks." And that little 'in' isn't so noticible. So everyone who posts here 'sucks.' I notice the weird things.

I've given my (ignored and unpopular) opinion on this before but since it's been a few years I'll try again.WW, no matter how much talent and ability you have to perform it takes a lot experience to develop stage presence and to understand how to manage the audience, there are many different kinds. Many different disasters happen on stage, these have to be handled well too. The scenarios are endless. I will not put an amateur singer/frontman in my band, it never works out. You have no idea how hard it is to entertain for 3-4 hours (or more) until you've done it. Then it takes a lot of practice to do it well. People have to like you more on your last song than on the first one.My advice (if you want it), get in a band by whatever means it takes (yes, I mean a backup position) and learn from it. You will have to slowly move your way more to the front as you get better. Sooner than you think you will be able to start your own band, then you will realize why amateur musicians are your worst nightmare. If you are that super-rare star waiting to be discovered it will not take long to happen. Otherwise you'll improve until you've worked your way to success, if you have worked hard enough. If I ran a label I would not consider trying to coach/train an amateur to a level he should get to by himself. Not what you wanted to hear, is it?
It's hard to make a comeback when you haven't been anywhere

If you want to be a rock artist, you gotta do what rock artists do, put their lives on hold and tour, gig, tour, gig, tour, gig......Many of the other listings on TAXI are, as I'm sure you've noticed, for opportunities in Film/TV, Libraries and the like. IMO This is where the majority of folks that have "made it" in the music business are making a living. They are behind the scenes but are providing the musical content for the thousands of hours of programming that are broadcast every year. Compared to the number of people doing this type of work, rock stars are a very rare commodity. So yeah, the reality is, if you want to be a rock artist, you gotta go out there. And it's a tough road. For example: Storm Large, who made it quite a ways up the ladder on Rock Star Supernova (love it or hate it), is playing this weekend in SF at the Red Devil Lounge. Now if the Red Devil can squeeze 300 people in, I'd be surprised. So, she went from national TV, right back out on the road, playing where she can to keep it alive.Sucks.

In any business each person has to determine what it is they will give up to achieve their goals. If you want to be a rock star, you have to go out and get it. It's all about who has the commitment and drive to make it happen. Whether you want celebrity, fame, money, love, friends, respect....you gotta work for it. Drew's got it right.

Getting out on the road is always mentioned as a neccessity to becoming a rock star. I think that isn't always true, but I sure don't hear very many stories about other marketing methods. I guess if you could figure out how to get 2 - 5 million fans paying attention to you all at the same time(and downloading your music), we'd have a new template. It'll start happening soon, because there are a lot of smart people out there. Will that change the face of rock and roll forever? Who knows? It's like downloading illegal mp3's. The issue isn't going to go away, and artists/managers WILL figure out new effective ways to sell lots of product. If you're an artist/celebrity, you could choose to try and marry Paris Hilton. That'd get ya noticed. Your shelf life might not be very long tho! steve
