first forward & some nice nines

Post by sevenharkey » Tue Sep 04, 2007 11:59 am

Interesting.I was recently reading a few threads about the frequency of nines in the rating system, and how nines don’t always mean forwards. Well, the other day, I got an awesome review that was chocked full of ‘em, but alas, the song wasn’t forwarded. The opp was for a music library looking for “rootsy, unique, and personal-sounding singer-songwriter/Americana/folk/AAA” songs. One submitted song, Roadside Dead, got 5 nines and 3 eights. However, the song features of California and Arizona imagery, and the reviewer felt “concerned about the specific place names and strong story focus” and that “these can limit the film and TV uses for a song”. While I don’t necessarily agree with this, I’m not an expert, so hey…I’m just happy for the great critique (and the nines). There was a forward in the mix, though: Spinning Out (which, btw, received only 2 nines). And though I’m well aware that it could sit in a music library until hell gets central air, it’s still my first forward, so...toot toot. Here 'em yourself at taxi.com/sevenharkey. Seven

A forward says a lot because they don't just hand those out. It is true that for film/television, specifics do limit the usefulness of a song. At a Taxi Rally, a library owner mentioned that he has a standing rule that he doesn't accept any music with proper names. "He said he loved her" is fine but "Bill said he loved Betty" only works when the TV show happens to be a love story about, well, Bill and Betty. Some friends of mine had a really good song called "Paris Calling" (like the city, not the goofy airess on her cell phone) but it didn't get any traction. They changed it to something like "Love Is Calling" (I don't remember exactly) and they started to get some mileage on that song because it could fit in many situations where the other only fit if the show or scene happened to be about someone longing for Paris, France.Congrats!Dave

Makes more sense, I guess. Interesting insight there, Dave. Thanks for sharing.

Hey - congrats on the Forward!!! It is true they pretty much want generic when it comes to film/tv.... I'm sure I just saw a listing that said they wanted geographic locations... but it is rare.
