A Goodyear For That TreeWhen my Mama told my Father, He was gonna have a sonHe walked out alone, to the lake by our homeAnd planted a tree in the sunWell, it was slow to sprout up, Till I was almost nineRich kids had bigger yards, with swings n monkey barsBut I had that tree to climbI felt let down on my birthday, When dad got his old Ford’s spareRolled it down the slope, got fifteen feet of ropeFound a strong branch and hung it thereI got a Goodyear for that treeIt looked kinda lonely swayin’ in the breezeDusty n faded without much treadDad coulda put it on our old roof insteadI was disappointed becauseAll Dad could afford to give me wasA Goodyear for that treeThen dad yelled just like Tarzan, swung out and jumped right inAnd I’d sneak out at night, cos like the moonlightMy young dreams learned to swimI learned to break a curveball, pitching through that old tireAnd those rich kids got loud, they brought boomboxes outIn their Radio FlyersThen for my 14th birthday, they threw me a party thereMy mind took a snapshot, when Sally’s bikini topCame off in mid-airCos I got a Goodyear for that treeIt’s the seed of my fondest memoriesI know I’ll wish I was swingin’ thereyears from now in my rockin’ chairNow I’m grateful to my dad becauseAll he could afford to get me wasA Goodyear for that treeNow I’m-a-plannin’ for my son, Got fifty bucks in his college fundThere’s a young oak swayin’ in the wind, for my boy’s 9th birthday I’ll give himA Goodyear for that treeA Goodyear for that tree…©2007 Robert George
