Mule in the MeadowThere’s a hoot owl on the high blade of an old windmillAnd a grey mule munching on some dew drop daffodilsIt’d been months since he’d seen his old master’s farmHe came after kickin’ his way out of his new barnNow those daffodils reminded him of his old homeHis first master’d fill that grey mule’s belly ‘fore his ownThat poor farmer grew lean fightin’ with that stubborn earthGuess it’s funny how a thin man’s dust’ll feed the dirtThere’s a mule in the meadowHome to find his long lost friendThey toiled and plowed, many a Spring and nowHe’s come to share the season’s endPacing over a poor man’s graveThat’s shallow as a shadowThat man’s weary bones, wouldn’t leave aloneBut tonight there’s a mule in the meadowHe remembered how a saddle used to itch his hideSo his friend’d use a blanket when he had to rideAs he pawed the earth the air suddenly grew chilledHe fell to one knee then two then laid down in that fieldThen a ghost moon rose above that red barn’s cold tin roofAnd the hoot owl took wing when that windmill somehow movedMoonlight laid a silver blanket on that old mule’s backAnd a shadow rode him up to heaven’s yonder shackThere’s a mule in the meadowHome to find his long lost friendThey toiled and they plowed, many a Spring and nowHe’s come to share the harvest’s endPacing over a poor man’s graveThat’s shallow as a shadowThat man’s weary bones, wouldn’t leave aloneBut tonight there’s a mule in the meadow©2007 Robert George
