FootprintsWe used to walk the seashore, barefoot..hand in handand ev'ry step behind us, were our castles in the sandthey once marked the shoreline, where time ebbs and flowsand moonlight floats like petals, from a pale white rosethough their ev'ry trace, was always erasedby fingers of the seasif I follow I still find, those pathways in my mindas if those memoriesare footprintsthat show where we'd beento look back without themis just watching the windsome are crooked...some are straightyet somehow tomorrow reads our fatein footprintsone night we went walking, but her feet weren't bareand when my hand found hers, her heart wasn't thereand there below the lighthouse, and gulls upon the cliffsshe melted into midnight, after a farewell kissand distant buoy bells, and haunted whisp'ring shellsall told of forsaken lovebut walking home in the dark, none spoke to my heart as my one lonely set offootprintsthat show where I'd beento look back without themis just watching the windsome are crooked...some are straightyet somehow tomorrow reads our fatein footprintsI'd stroll the beaches drinking winetoss the bottles but each timewaves just washed them back to shoreso why can't wheels of the oceanthat turn tides in endless motionreturn her footprints to me once morethen someone took my hand, when I reached out in prayerthough to any gull that's watching, I was the only one therebut His path is there to follow, for all who believethough whether in sand or water, the Good Lord doesn't leavefootprints...Oh footprints(c)2006 Robert George
