The Roots of HeavenI'd hoped for a fancy new Atariso at first I felt kinda sorryDad got me a telescope for my birthdayone night I was bored by an A-Team rerunthought goin' outside just might be funso I pointed my scope at the Milky Waythough I used to cough my way out of Sunday schoolI could see those silver-studded jewelswere the roots of heavenwhere hope and faith grow highthough our feet belong to the earthour soul is of the skynow whenever it gets darkI let the roots of heaven reach my heartone winter day right before dinneras shadows danced with sundown's shimmerfor some reason I aimed my scope down the blockI saw a homeless man on the cornerrubbing his weathered hands to get warmerthen Dad pulled up by him at the stopDad rolled down his window and gave him some billsright there I learned that men doin' God's willare the roots of heavenwhere hope and faith grow highthough our feet belong to the earthour soul is of the skynow whenever life gets darkI let the roots of heaven reach my heartthough the stars and their glorycan tell forever's storywe can see them and still be blindif we don't reflect their light and shinelike the roots of heaventhe roots of heaven(c)2006 Robert George
