The Festival Scene

Post by edteja » Mon Mar 13, 2006 12:53 pm

I just got notice that I was accepted as a performer at the Tucson Folk Festival (May 6 & &). The cool thing is that my demo was mostly original tunes, so I'll have some fun getting audience reaction to songs I'll be pitching through taxi. At any rate, it will be fun. It is kind of competitive to get into, at least for local (or psuedo-local) folk. If any other Taxi people will be down there, let me know so we can meet!

Hey!Well, I wish I was closer to Tucson than Missouri. I won't make the festival but good luck with it. Generally speaking, I have a good amount of confidence with songs that have reviewed well on Taxi when I'm sending them outside of Taxi. It's not definitive, but if I can get a positive consensus from several Taxi reviewers, I usually have an excellent chance of getting positive responses from the industry in general outside of Taxi.Dave

I checked with the Festival organizers, Dave but they refused to move the festival closer to Missouri. Damn uncivil, I calls it.I agree about reviews. One of the reasons for me joining Taxi was to get feedback. I've been reading through a lot of the back files about various people's reactions to reviews and find it fascinating. Largely, people seem to expect quite a lot. I write books, as well as songs, and my experience is that you are lucky if a book reviewer who publishes a review has actually read the book. Taxi, overall, strikes me as a much more professional organization than that. But still, all I expect reviewers to do is give their honest opinions, then it is up to me hat happens next. But sure, a few nice reviews makes a kid's heart grow warm and boosts the confidence to show your art to the great unwashed.

Congratulations on getting the booking.I also love getting Taxi's reviews. I agree that they pretty well reflect the industry standards. However, live performance is quite different than recordings. An arrangement that works in front of an audience might not make it through a song screening and vice versa. I'm sure this isn't news to you, I'm just saying the obvious.Have a great show and let us know how it went.Nomi

Thanks for that Nomi. YEs I do different arrangements live, but it is always interesting to see if the vibe of the song wakes them up or puts them to sleep. Do they listen to the words, or does the overall sound I am laying down make them stop listening? Of course it varies a lot with venues--bars being the worst for anything that is lyric-centric and best for songs with a backbeat you can't lose. Still...
