Been packing groceries for 25 yearsBeen looking for ways to pack up my tears So I write my songs and I make them snappy And it makes me feel terribly happy,(terribly happy, terribly happy, terribly happy) My girlfriend got pregnant, make her sick all dayWhile I built the crib, she barfed So when she finally poped that kid out she felt (BREATH, AWEE) terribly happy (terribly happy, terribly happy, terribly happy)When life gets you down, turn it around and beTerribly HappyIf this record bombs then that’s okayI’ll always gonna have, plenty more to sayIt’s all about the people I’ve met along the wayWhen I know that… I feel Terribly HappyHAPPYMAN VIOLENTLY ATTACKED AND ROBBED – CHOOSES HAPPINESS ANYWAY On the end of the first good day of the www.taxi.com convention I was driving to my hotel and when I stopped to run the key to open the gate some guy in a “Security” shirt walked up and his friend reached into the car and tried to turn off the key and grab my wallet, I, perhaps unwisely resisted and started honking the horn to get attention, his friend in the “Security” shirt got in the back seat and started choking me. I reckoned breathing was more important then money so I gave up my wallet and they took off. The police came and started taking a report when they had to take off due to a “shots fired” call. Fortunately I wasn’t really injured, though my neck is still sore and I’m trying to prepare for the inevitable Post Trauma symptoms. Still am choosing happiness reasonably well. Things like this remind you of how life can and will leave us all and how important it is treasure every moment. And to not carry too much cash (300$ loss I think). It’s several days later now and I’m basically “over it” though I still have some PTST symptoms. Thank you all for your kind thoughts. THE www.TAXI.com CONVENTION: FIRST DAY:I'm at the songwriters www.taxi.com conference. Starts off with the longest line I've been in in 10 years, like 1 1/2 hour wait to sign up. Soul crushing boredom and a sense of soul crushing smallness in a sea of people trying to make it as a songwriter Then a total of hours of waiting over two days to get picked in their open mike or at their "big shots review your song" thing (no luck in either). The positive side: er not much. Did finally succeed in re-writing my song NO ANGEL due to some random event that gave me the ideas for the first verse. Met up with some San Diegian friends and some people I met at the much smaller and personal conference from last month. Aside from that i'm dying up here.SECOND DAY: The Happy Man spent his first night in LA at a Poetry/Music open mike. Let me tell you, poetry people can be worse then bar people. One went up and made some "jokes" about "fags" which had the hippy like crowd hating him from the first joke till the end. Then a man went up to read poetry and two people made rude comments and the host got upset with them and gave a lecture on respecting performers (pretty well said I though) which cause much ruckus and one of the poetry hecklers to storm out. Oh I gave one of my best ever piano performs of Pitter Patter and No Angel. What a night!WHAT I LEARNED AT THE TAXI.COM CONFERENCE: Writing for yourself vs. other writing for another artist. In my opinion much of the tension that I and others feel in the music industry, I think, a confusion between two different roles that we might chose to play (we can play either or both at different times) the role of writing for yourself as an artist and the role of writing for others. In writing for yourself you can write whatever you want and present it however you want and that will reflect on you and your “image” to people who enjoy your music. In dealing with partners musically and in business you need to find people that will support that music and image and avoid people who want to make you and your music into something you don’t want to be. In writing for other artists you obviously have to write a song that would fit their image and their skills. If you submit a song like to a Garth Brooks listing and the song is nothing like what he would sing it’s hardly their fault for rejecting it, you haven’t done your “job” which is obvious if you know what your job is, but remarkably many don’t. They confuse trying to tell Garth or whomever what he should like vs. respecting what he and his fans expect of him and of his songwriter. In writing this out it seems so clear cut and self evident but it’s amazing how we confuse these obviously different roles.
