The last guitarist that I tried to emulate closely (and that's been some time ago) was a guy by the name of Frank Gambale. He's still considered one of my favorites, for his unique style & sweep picking technique. Here are a few more:

Jimi Hendrix
Yngwie Malmsteem
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Steve Vai
John Petrucci

Yea! Can't believe I forgot Alex Lifeson, Andy Summers, and The Edge. Plus, Johnny Winter, Joe Walsh, John Scofield, Albert King, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, John Lee Hooker, Mike Campbell, Paul Simon --- and Willie Nelson!

Ern 8-) :)

It's extremely hard to answer this question because there are so many excellent players out there. Jazz, pop, rock, country, classical guitarists and so on..

Well, here's a few of my favorites:
Steve Hackett from Genesis (left -77), he is an excellent rock player and an excellent classical player.
Steve Howe from Yes, very unique style and plays so many different type of string instruments.
Eric Clapton, he has done so many wonderful song
John McLaughlin, well, an extremely talented guitar player, even when he plays fast as hell, there's always a melodic line

I remember seeing him with Genesis over thirty years ago, in the days when
Peter Gabriel wore a red dress and fox's head.
He used to sit in a chair throughout the show. Excellent guitarist!

No I'm just a LITTLE jealous! Well, I wasn't even born then, but they mean a lot to me as a band and especially Hackett, Gabriel and Banks!

Everyone that's been mentioned more or less plus

Robben Ford (anything and everything he's ever done more or less)
Larry Carlton (his early work with Steely Dan in particular, cuts like 'Don't Take Me Alive' and 'Kid Charlemegne')
Will Ray (amazing ring slide work)
Brent Mason (from chicken pickin', to rock to Bensen soul he's got it all)
Jimmy Bruno(amazing straight ahead be-bopper with a ton of Philly' attitude, great teacher too)
Joe Pass (seriously, how could he be overlooked in any guitar player list?)
Nels Henning Orsted Petersen (OK, I snuck in a bass player, YouTube him and then tell me he doesn't belong here)
Michael Landau (from 80's and 90's studio work to his understated stuff today with JT, always tasteful)
Jerry Reed (aka 'snowman')
Merle Travis (anyone dissin' Merle is lookin' for a fight, got it?)
Alan Holdsworth (I can't hardly listen to him play anymore, but loved his work in the 80's ala 'Heavy Metal Fatigue, and his work with Tony Williams)
Jerry Donahue (fellow 'Hellecaster' member with Will Ray, gorgous hybrid picking stuff)

Done for now
Erich

Lots of influences over the years, but I'm into Guthrie Govan at the moment.
