Nobody has mentioned Nels Cline! (?) IMO he's one of the most unique, expressive players I've ever heard.
great 3 min solo starts at about 2:55 into this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmI7SiLe4Vw

Well, I have to add some really great Swedish guitar players to the list as well!

Roine Stolt (Founder of Flower Kings)

Mattias "IA" Eklund (Founder of Freak Kitchen)

Wow! I'm glad I asked the question!!

So many great guitarists, and some I must admit I don't know!

What a great instrument the guitar is, and they all make it their own!

Thanks all.

Unknown Dave. :D

I was feeling the futility of trying to pick favorite guitarists, so I just stuck with the Steve's. If I had picked the Django's or Carlos's it would have been a much shorter list. :D

Ya, that reminds me, I was thinking "why do we always judge guitarists on their soloing", what about all the great rhythm players and accompanists.
-Prince is one
-Nile Rogers
-anybody whose ever played for James Brown
-Keith Richards, scoff if you will, he is the sound of the Stones
-Hendrix and Van Halen tend to be judged by their soloing but they're both great rhythm players
-James Taylor
-Paul Simon
-Freddie Green from Count Basie's Band
-Joe Pass was a great accompanist
-Billy Joe from Green Day
-Andy Summers
-The Edge
-Tuck Andress

Those guys play songs.

I agree! Without rhythm guitarists, it wouldn't be the same. Mine isn't bad but I can think of many, many who never get their due but continue to pay 'em.

Other jazzers I admire:

Howard Alden
Bucky Pizzarelli
Martin Taylor
Russell Malone
Gene Bertoncini
Peter Leitch
Ed Bickert

There is a rather famous rhythm guitar story about George Van Eps. He was considered to be Frank Sinatra's favorite rhythm player. Apparently, there was a session booked with a large ensemble. George couldn't make the session, so Sinatra cancelled the session. So much for the "invisible rhythm guitar player"
