What do you think are my chances for this punk listing?
NEW LISTING -- PUNK/ALT ROCK SONGS AND INSTRUMENTALS a la Green Day, Blink 182, Minor Threat, Social Distortion, etc., needed by the Producer of an Extreme Sports Reality TV Show. He needs fast/uptempo songs and instrumentals for the opening/closing theme. Emphasis on guitar is ideal. Songs should have a catchy melodic hook and lyrically (if applicable) should reflect "anti-authority", "taking a stand", "pushing the limits", etc. Songs and/or Instrumentals used will receive credits during airplay, end credits, and your web site link posted on show. Recordings need to be Broadcast Quality (great home recordings should be fine). Please submit one to three songs and/or instrumentals online or per CD, include lyrics (if applicable). All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI and must be received no later than Tuesday, December 29, 2009.
TAXI # S091229PU
The track is on my taxi page: http://www.taxi.com/jnmorrison
It's called "Up Yours (...punk)"
It's a semi final mix right now give it a listen, and what do you think? Am I on target?
Any tips for mixing would be well appreciated too!
Thanks
Nick

Re: What are the chances for a punk listing?
Hey Nick,
I like it! Great energy. Pretty catchy. Seems close to what they want.
I wonder if you might have a better chance if it were longer .. since they want something for the opening and closing themes. Guess they could loop it.

Re: What do you think are my chances for this punk listing?
Hi, Nick. you live in Osaka? very cool place to live.. do you speak Kansai ben?
i listened to your track. here are my thoughts. sorry its kinda brutal.
I cant hear the snare much, its buried.. drums needs to be way up. there are not many variation in drums grooves/fills, i only hear the same fills over and over. a real drummer won't play the same fills.
I dont know if the arrangement is done well. for my recent forwarded punk tracks, i just did simple ABAB. sometimes with an intro. but with clear distinction between 2 sections. sections needs good contrast with dynamics and variation.
lead guitar is way too loud over other instruments, there are some minor noise issues im hearing thru my cans.
there are other things to think about when submitting. its not just making it on target but things like broadcast quality, current sounding music (where applicable), arrangement, production, engineering, etc. are also important
hope it helps

タエコちゃんコメントおきに!せやで、大阪はめっちゃめっちゃおもろい!あなたの出身はどこ?
Anyway, thanks so much for your comment! Seriously, I really appreciate it! If we can't be brutally honest with each other, and with ourselves - what's the point?
So the drums aren't loud enough, and the lead guitar is TOO Loud? Both easy fixes!
As per the arrangement, it is intro(A), ABAB, solo over A, then B then out. So, what you're telling me is that it's not clear enough? Do you have any suggestions on how to distinguish the parts more? (maybe more difference between the drum grooves of the two parts?)
I really appreciate your feedback, as you said - you've been forwarded in this genre before so I was really hoping to hear from you!
OH - and a new mix is up, if you've got a chance.
Thanks again!

Nick!
Took a listen. Don't listen to much punk (basically just what I may hear on TV), so I can't be as critical. I thought there were a few spots where the drums would drag a bit from everything else. I thought the guits were a little loud too, but overall I think you nailed it from compositional standpoint. Good luck with this one!

Re: What do you think are my chances for this punk listing?
yeh Ibanez is right about the drums. what i think is that guitars are rushed in some places so that makes it sounds like drums are behind the beat.
i would just do a whole new drum part with different grooves and fills and variations for both A B. i havent heard any commercial songs that has a fill in the beginning of a new section. they have fills at the every 8/16 bars or big 2-bar fill for building up to Chorus. and also i make 16 bars for a whole A and 16 bars of B. you may not agree, but one section seems short in your track.
then i would re-record and edit/tighten up the guitars and bass to go with the drums. but maybe thats just me, im a geek.
good luck 頑張ってや。
