Post by mca » Wed Jan 13, 2010 5:05 am

Hello to all,

I'm looking for a
no holds barred
critique of my first song on Taxi. Include in your tirades any categories appropriate for the song.

Find it herehttp://www.taxi.com/antonym

Thanks in advance :!:

Interesting one here. I found the mood of the instrumental track sometimes conflicting with the vibe of the lyric which works sometimes but was confounding for me in this case. It's a very sweet, almost innocent lyric but then you have sections that are sort of blues/rock with distorted guitar and bluesy lead stuff going on. I thought it was very well sung and sweet, I might try cleaning up some of the guitars tone-wise, make the intrumental arrangement jibe with the lyric a bit more. Good luck! eo.

really nice song!
Your voice is really lovely!

I would like a little more high end on the instrumental track. The drums sound a little too synthetic to my ears. Might be the lack of dynamic.

Thanks eo. If you were pressed to categorize the song, where does it fit?

Thanks Orest. Just for the record, that is a real drummer, not a machine. The master is a wav file and sounds much brighter than the mp3 posted. I'll have to work on correcting that somehow.

Are the drums very compressed and gated? They sounded strange to my ears somehow. The cymbals were very short and didn't have the natural ending. Guess the production is a matter of taste, I like the drums to have all their dynamic range and sound.

Yes, the objective was a punchy drumtrack, heavy comp and gate. I didn't want the drums to compete with the rest of the tracks. The focus was melody and counterpoint.
Where would you submit it?

Thanks again.

I'm not sure what kind of listing it would fit.
I never give any critique on the lyrics because I can't write any good myself.

Maybe adult pop of some kind?

I'm gonna try for film/tv that asks for either rock, blues or adult contemporary. Maybe if a new country listing sounds right, I'll try that. I'm sure it fits somewhere. I'm gonna try another computer as this one I'm using is blocking your url.

I'll be back....thanks again for your comments..

When I first heard this, the drums also sounded fake and synthetic to me. Not really something you want if you went through the trouble of recording real drums.

This song does have it all. A great structure, great production, and some great sounding melodies and vocals and such. That said, it's really missing something that makes it special to my ears. It lacks that "current" sound, and this is not something I would expect to hear on the radio. I'm also not a big fan of that synth lead sound, it seems to be out of place.

Hope this helps!
-Jeff
