good explanation Mazz.

heres some geeky visual stuff that you can see where you can deal with MIDI ins/outs.

big pictures, sorry. i did t resize but you can see all in detail. i started a new BFD session file so you can see where MIDI stuff can be routed.

to be able to see MIDI I/O, open your mix window. and look at the bottom left. click on the little box thing there.

then, i ticked "instrument"

then i can see MIDI out from my BFD at the moment its not going anywhere yet.

@Mazz; I wasn't trying to make a broader point about the flexibility of DAWs in general, just that working in beats and bars is a slightly different paradigm than playing along to a drum machine with a start/stop pedal. If I'm importing a loop, I can tell Tracktion how many beats are in it and have T3 calculate the tempo; I still need a rough idea how long the song is to calculate how many times to copypaste a MIDI or audio loop, if my method is to improvise over the loop. But once you have MIDI and audio playing back together in sync, there are some challenges involved, if you want to change the tempo; the best modern DAWs deal with this pretty transparently, but not all are created equal, even when all your audio loops are AppleLoops or Acidized WAVs. Ha, can you tell I do a lot of linear recording? 8-)

That's kind of where I was coming from...

With my previous set-up, I was using a Korg D1600 and Boss DDR. Once I figured out BPM, I just pushed the start buttons on both units at the same time while I played guitar (or piano) and sang scratch vox on the track. The result was 3 tracks at one time recorded into the D1600, and the drums were "usable". In fact, I started using this instead of a click-track, since the drum machine was guaranteed to be on tempo. The DDR would let you trigger switches to other patterns simply by pushing a button. With that setup, I didn't have any editing capabilities to speak of, but I also didn't have to drag/copy little bits and pieces - everything that went into the unit was recorded.

Thanks to all for this discussion as it's given me a much better understanding of the change in approach I need to make towards tracking drums on a computer. Of course, all said I could plug the DDR into the MBOX, but of course, I'd still be without edits and likely have mismatched kits. I need to make the move to tracking the drums with this approach... and ya'll have pushed me into the vortex of learning it!

Thanks again. I don't have any virtual chocolate bars (I guess they'd melt in the computer anyway) but if you need any keen ears to listen to any tracks for feedback, I'm a multi-genre dude who's happy to help. :-D

You do know that BFD can respond to MIDI notes from the DDR, right? You don't necessarily have to change how you record, if you don't want to, you can just add a MIDI cable to your rig and slave your DAW to the drum machine.

That's definitely intriguing... I'm gonna have to give that a whirl when I get back from outta town. Wretched day job.
