SURF and HOT ROD -style INSTRUMENTALS

Post by cardell » Tue Dec 22, 2009 2:03 pm

I like the look of this listing (see below). I've been playing around with an idea and I'm really having a ball. My rough track sounds quite 'kitchy', but it seems to be working. Anyone else working on something for this listing?

Stuart

SURF and HOT ROD -style INSTRUMENTALS influenced by Duane Eddy, The Ventures, Dick Dale, Davie Allen, Link Wray, The Chantays, etc. sought by a label that's putting together an internationally distributed compilation album. A retro-production style is preferable. They want the recordings to sound and feel as authentic to the above-mentioned artists as possible. Please do not submit if you are using a drum machine, or a drummer that sounds like a drum machine. Raw demo recordings are acceptable, as long as the performances have character. Please submit one to three instrumentals online or per CD. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI and must be received no later than Thursday, January 21, 2010. See Instrumental section for full details.

Hi Stuart,

I really want to do stuff like this, but the drum requirement is too much. I am not setup to record drums and where would I find a bad surf music drummer? Maybe ask around the bars in Hermosa Beach?

Hi Stuart,

Just under the wire, I submitted a song "Lonely City" to the above listing.

Hey, Stuart:

I threw a new tune together called "Real Cool Head" just in time (I was on vacation, recorded the guitars before leaving town and did everything else on the road - I'll redo the mix asap...).

It's on my TAXI page, http://www.taxi.com/ckbarlow.

Hi John & C K,

You're both getting some very impressive guitar tones here. I got one submitted as well but to be honest...now I don't feel as confident.

Stuart, you gotta throw your hat in the ring! It's probably great and you're just letting nerves get to you.

Even if it's not, you have to start somewhere, and TAXI is a great place to learn. Tons of supportive people to give your stuff a listen and provide feedback. Give it a whirl.

You know what they say about the lottery -- you can't win if you don't play. ;)

I have a question about the above listing. It is past the deadline so this is for future reference.

They say, "Raw demo recordings are acceptable, as long as the performances have character."

Does this mean that the music submitted and maybe forwarded and maybe used can be of demo quality? Or does this mean that the submitted songs are only demos and if a song gets forwarded and the company likes it, then we re-record a real version?

I wondered about this too.

I took it to mean that: an interesting performance (one with character) is more important than the overall quality of the recording. Therefore, if I make that assumption, I will also assume that the intention is to use our recording as the master.

Bit late to this dance, but I also submitted to this one - I read the listing to say "we are OK with a rough demo, and either you, or we, will do a proper recording if we like it." Not sure if they want them THIS rough for a record!

BTW - the other submissions I listened to are very cool!

mine is called "Minor Wave" (I was in a hurry...)

I like it. It has a good strong melodic statement. Maybe the world is ready for a instrumental surf music revival.
