Best Pop Song Ever Written?

Post by DorothyWallace » Mon Feb 15, 2010 9:58 pm

Just for fun!

If you had to pick the best pop song of all time, what song would you pick?

I'll go first. I would choose "I Heard it Through the Grapevine"

There are so many renditions, but it always comes back to the great lyric. And such a universal sentiment.

Dorothy

That's a tough question. :)

One of my all time favourites is: "If" by David Gates in the band Bread. I also love "Suspicious Minds" by Mark James (as performed by Elvis Presley).

"Stranger in paradise" from Kismet is the first one that comes to my mind.. I think it's from the 50ies, and I guess was considered a pop song back then.. :D

You should come to one of my shows; I've been doing that one at soundcheck, lately, just for fun. As to what's the best pop song ever, I don't know, but it's probably a Roy Orbison song.

Great tune that - I think it was originially written by the Russian composer Borodin in about 1870 - his Polovtsian Dances. Oh the useless info I store away....

I didn't know that! I also like Price Igor that was adapted the same way. Very interesting way to work, to adapt work from classical composers, and put lyrics on. I like Tchaikovsky, Smetana and Grieg a lot, so maybe I should study some pieces. I would think it's viable to let yourself inspire, if their work is in public domain..

But you do a lot of nice work yourself, Simon. Very interesting to surf your webpage!

Thanks Magne - I just listened to your two songs on Taxi and can return the compliment! Plus you've inspired me to start a new thread - how many cases are there of songwriters using classical melodies or chord sequences in their songs....
