Just a tad annoying?

Post by DesireeBowen » Mon Mar 01, 2010 3:57 pm

Okay, I know I probably *shouldn't* be annoyed by this... but one of my last songs that I posted in Peer to Peer was viewed over 100 times but I only got about a dozen responses. I understand that people read posts in General Hangouts etc, and don't really feel the need to comment... but if you are posting in Peer to Peer, the point is to GET comments! And I don't think it matters if they are redundant, sometimes that is helpful to know if something is either really good or really needs work.

I know it isn't a big deal... just like I said in the subject... a tad annoying.....

May I play coach here?

What meaning are you applying to the fact that they viewed but did not comment?

Our emotions are a result of our beliefs/thoughts - so what are you thinking that's resulting in you feeling annoyed?

And what can you think/believe that might have you feel differently?

Also, it is a public forum. Dont think that everybody that listened to it was a Taxi member. There are people that just lurk and dont post. They cant post unless they are at least a forum member, we have a lot of "lurkers" here!

Well, like Brindabella said, there are a lot of lurkers apparently, so I understand that. I am thinking that probably those who viewed and didn't respond either 1) didn't feel like they had anythign worthwhile to add, 2) felt their comments might be redundant, 3) they didn't have anything good to say so they didn't want to comment at all, or 4) they didn't have the time to comment. All reasons I get. But my answer to those excuses would be 1) there is always something worthwhile- even I liked it, or I didn't get it, or it was a little boring, are all all short opinions and they are still of value 2) as I said earlier, sometimes repeated comments are the most worthwhile, 3) negative things are still worthwhile as well 4) if they have the time to browse, then hopefully they would have the time to leave something as a comment. I just think if you are going to look through the Peer to Peer section, you should be prepared to comment. I understand browsing the other forums, but Peer to Peer's purpose is specifically for feedback.

I know I am a sensitive person. Which can be a good thing- people think I am generally a very considerate person, but it also means that I often get my feelings hurt because people aren't being as considerate to me as I would to them. (And I know I still screw up sometimes too, I'm not perfect). So anyway, this is just an example of something I think may be a bit rude (for 90% of the people that viewed not to leave a comment) but it really isn't a big deal so I will get over it. :) Just in one of those ranting moods I suppose!

Okay Coach, getting off the couch now, how much do I owe ya? ;)

I've also noticed the very low ratio of views to comments, but it's good to develop a tough skin about this kind of thing. In as crazy a business as music, you'll need some pretty thick skin to survive emotionally because there are a lot of ups and downs.

That being said, it certainly would be nice if more people would comment. On a side issue, I think that the longer you've been around the forums, the more well-known you are, and the more you post on other people's threads, the more likely you are to receive comments from other people.

Hope that helps,

Richard

A lot of people around here are learning or lurking to see if they feel like they have the musical chops to join Taxi. A lot of those people just won't have anything to contribute as far as critiquing a song. So don't take it personally that many people will view but not comment. I also listen to a lot of music posted here, but since I really only do instrumentals, I don't feel like I have much to say about songs with lyrics, except that I either like or don't like, which really doesn't help that much. My engineering is also pretty subpar when it comes to non-orchestral things, so I also don't have much to contribute on the technical side. So I'll view a lot and not comment. It's not personal, its just I don't have anything valuable to add.

The longer you stay around and post, the more people will listen and comment. There is something to be said about just having your music heard and not commented on also. All ears are good ears in that sense.

Desiree, I used to comment more, but I realized my critiques are more just comments, instead of screener-type critiques that are what the peer to peer are suppose to be about. There are so many more knowledgeable and qualified people here that have much more helpful advice. I am very ignorant of musical structure and theory. I can really only say if I liked it or what it sounds like overall to me. And also the more returns I get and all the defects in MY songs hardly qualify me to comment or have much confidence in the helpfulness of my comments. Sometimes it doesn't take much to impress me, and when I make a good comment, others usually come back and tell the author they could do this and that, move this here change that there, making my comment look silly. I'm not adverse to looking silly, but when i don't have a clue, especially orchestrations, lol, I just don't know anything helpful to add, so it's probably better for me to be quiet lest I say the wrong thing. For example, on your song, "Let's Make Butterflies", I can picture it being a Kodak commercial or something similiar. I don't know why, and to me that is good, but I can also see where you might take that to be offensive. I am sort of sensitive on getting advice, and insensitive when giving it, however the tables are turning, lol.

Desiree:
Well, I can speak with a clean conscience, for I did comment on your songs in peer to peer. Positively, I might add. The first mistake people make on peer to peer (usually, new posters) is that they post a link to their music site, and ask for comments. If they don't ask for comments on one specific song, they are unlikely to get a response. It's a rare individual who will go to a site and listen to each song, and then respond. you haven't made that mistake.
I make it a point to listen to the tunes on peer to peer. If they ask about production quality, I often pass, because I have absolutely no talent there. If it's punk rock, I also pass. If it's orchestral, I'll comment if I think it sounds good.
The toughest ones are those who are new. If they're good (to my limited ears), I'll pay them a compliment. If not, they get silence. If they're arrogant about their imagined abilities -- well, let's just say there are a couple of posts I wish i could take back.
The last time I actually posted a song link -- actually, it was the first time -- the first poster who commented made some disparaging comments to the effect that I was corrupting the morals of young ladies, and even worse, celebrating those lack of morals. I was initially mortified, but after an exchange of a couple of PM's, I discovered that his religious worldview differed remarkably from mine. I might add that this individual has not posted again.
A 10% response seems to be the norm here. Don't be offended about the laack of responses. You have talent. With a little luck, you'll take it further.

Yall are great. I appreciate the feedback! I DO need to grow a thicker skin (in more areas than just the music business!). It is good to know this is the norm and it hopefully isn't just me and my music! Len- I love your comment about the Kodak commercial. I totally take that as a compliment! :)

I've just realized the two last discussions I've started on here have been rants! ("Pitchy" and this one... although "pitchy" was meant in more of a fun spirit). I think I have been a little stressed out this past week and am letting it come through here on Taxi. Maybe I should let that stress out in a new song instead! :)
