Ditto to what everybody else said, AND...

Make sure that it is clear in your contract what and when you get paid. Because - when we sell the film and there's money is meaningless. Are you paid out of the initial distribution funds? Gross? Net? When...

I recommend giving license for limited showings with the option to expand the license with renegotiation and an option for them to purchase the copyright. I think that your composer fees and the licensing fees don't necessarily have to be the same thing - and it's a way that you can build in increasing income if and when the film gets distribution.

Protect your credits and make sure you'll be listed in IMDB - and that you will get a copy of the film that you can use for your reel.

And have a lawyer read any and all contracts or deal memos before signing.

Congratulations - you're off and running now!

"And have a lawyer read any and all contracts or deal memos before signing." ...yes that is a good point too. If you are in IL i can recommend some, if you would like.

Also i wrote "have fun" and that seamed tacked on but there is another GOOD thing about free work...you get to be the honest to god artist that you are, with less input from the others in the food chain and if you are working for free you can spread your wing ... who knows perhaps you will be allowed to the thing that makes your sound...."the thing", and we here at TAXI will be getting the "looking for jeff green leaf sound" on the next dispatch sheet. So like i said HAVE FUN.

Congrats, Jeff! This sounds like wonderful fun, and a good way to build experience in scoring for film.

I would suggest ensuring that the filmmakers file a cue sheet when it's finished, so there's clear info about what tunes of yours are used in the film and where.

Keep us up to date on how it's going -- this is EXCITING!

Suz

P.S. Ditto on sending Quicktime samples of the music + video to the producers -- it saves oodles of time!
