Buyout deals
I've been offered a buyout deal from a library, meaning, they're paying me a small fee upfront to do a cd and I get no synch fees only performance royalties from my PRO. The librarys credentials are good.
This may have been covered elsewhere on the forum but I couldn't find any info.
Just wanted to check whether any of you have done this kind of deal before and what your opinion of it is?
Most of the deals I've done in the past have been with needledrop libraries and the synch fees have been quite significant. I've also done deals with smaller libraries who operate from a very different model which haven't been that rewarding financially (although it could still pick up).
I am tempted though as it's more music out there working for me.
Thoughts, opinions greatly appreciated

Re: Buyout deals
Buyout deals can be good moneymakers, according to what I've read on these forums, and I don't know of anyone who makes significant $ from libraries in general that would turn up her nose only because the deal's a buyout. I have no specific personal experience with this type of deal, so you may want to wait for some of the saltier members to chime in.

Thanks for your reply, I somehow expect most people on this forum would say 'go for it'
which is also the reason why I posted. Sometimes all I need is someone who says "DO IT".

DO IT.
As long as the upfront fees make it worth your while at least somewhat there's nothing to lose.

Thank you.
The money upfront is not great to be honest but I still think it may be worth my while

Re: Buyout deals
Hi Bassman,
I have a company that I have been doing a buyout deal with for a few years and I really like it. One nice thing about this particular company is the man (owner) I deal with is very nice and easy to communicate with. He is not necessarily easy, he doesn't accept everything I give him, but he is very reasonable with his demands. I usually end up writing double the tracks of what he accepts but I use the "rejects" for other companies so it works out fine. I assume you have asked your company about submission policy. The other nice thing is we communicate about what genre he needs coupled with what genre I am comfortable writing so I'm not trying to write out of my strength. I would suggest you nailing that down before signing as well.
All in all I think it will be a great opportunity for you. When I finish a project, we take a month off and he hits me up for the next one. Hopefully this will start happening with you. Good luck!
Dave
