Ambient/Atmospheric listing
Hey everyone,
I am pretty bumbed. Just got a return on a pop listing I was 99% sure I would nail, but hey, 1% is there for a reason.
Anyway I am sending 2 tracks for another listing.
"City of Uke" and "Excorsism 1"
Update: OKAY, I came up with a 3rd one. It is another instrumental called "Dexter is Leaving"
2nd Update: Alright so I made some edits to "Excorcism 1" and "City of Uke" according to some of your comments. Really all I did was trim the intros.
Thanks!
NEW LISTING -- AMBIENT/ATMOSPHERIC SONGS and INSTRUMENTALS in the wide range of The xx, Thievery Corporation, Zero 7, Sigur Ros, Explosions in the Sky, etc., needed by the Music Supervisor of a major cable TV series. Ideal style would be fresh/contemporary, and should work well as underscores to scenes. Male or female vocals are OK and all tempos are fine. Excellent performances are absolutely essential. Broadcast quality needed [great sounding home recordings are OK]. We recently ran this as Dispatch listing #D100310TV, so if you submitted to that listing, please send in new material this time around. Please submit one to three songs and/or instrumentals online or per CD, include lyrics (when applicable.) All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI - and must be received no later than Monday, April 12, 2010.

Hey Gerry,
I was 99% sure I would nail, but hey, 1% is there for a reason.
Great winning spirit!
I liked these a lot, especially "Exorsism 1". That sounded spot on. Should be a good chance with at least one of these. On Exorcism it sounded a little odd at 35' sec (at the start of the verse). It was like the whole mix got a different texture to it. Like you've pasted an intro on to it with a completely different instrumentation. Maybe you could hide that with a crossfade, some morphing, a cymbal swell or something?
"City of Uke" sounded very much Absynth, and there was a double hit at 39' that sounded funny. I know that particular patch is like that, but it may sound like a timing issue for others. Perhaps you could just cut 10sec from the backend of that intro? I think the piece is in range, but maybe I missed a layer or two and perhaps the odd effect, in that long piece. Allthough I know the piece probably gets a pad function on screen, and you can't listen for ongoing interest in an ambient piece like this.
But I love "Exorcism 1", very Sïgur Rós like, IMO

Re: Ambient/Atmospheric listing
I do like the idea of cutting the intro short since it is the same basic theme that repeats. This will give it an extra layer of "pseudo" compositional complexity.
Thanks alot!

I'm really surprised that "Excorcism 1" didn't get forwarded on that listing. It seems totally in line with what they are asking for. Nice vibe, good quality production, cool vocals. I thought it was really good.

Hey Gerry
Like the songs. Very well done. I am not really familiar with these artist so I cant really comment too much there. On Exorcism 1, I heard a little scratchy sound in the left ear a couple of times (I think around 1:45 & 3:00) perhaps that was intentional. Other than that I thought the vocal was great and overall production good as well.
Good luck with these.
BTW, I'm your neighbor south of Tampa in Venice.

Re: Ambient/Atmospheric listing
I Like Exorcism... I could imagine it at the closing title of some freaky haunting type movie .. ...But .. For me ..I think less singing and more instrumental. Whats you instrument of choice? Go with a lead with that ....unless it's banjo . then never mind

Re: Ambient/Atmospheric listing
Cool pieces, Uke may be the least close to the listing just because it lacks that drum groove that it seems like they want these days, Dexter seems to fill the bill well in that case.
Exorcism has a good hook but you really can't take 1:22 to get to it. The music supervisor won't even know it's a vocal song when they are auditioning, you only have 10 or 15 seconds to catch their ear, that's just the reality of the game. The entire intro is extraneous, IMO, you could just start right at the verse, first chord and bam, we hear the vocal. The vocal is engaging and is the point of the whole thing, so get to it right away. For the album version, you can keep the intro, but lose it altogether for the Film/TV license version.
Good stuff!!

imagine if John Williams and Trent Reznor met at Bernard Hermann's for lunch and Brian Eno was the head chef!

Hi
Like the songs both.....but particularly Exorcism it has a good feel and you sort of sink into it. I have to agree about the intro though....could either be shoreter or lose it altogether......and I would finish with reverb on the last not.....but thats just me.....excellent.....good call.
