You know that you have a lot of gear when.......

Post by robbylane » Sat Apr 03, 2010 6:12 pm

This evening, I had a lightbulb burn out in my upstairs hallway. I needed some form of a step-ladder to reach up to and replace said light bulb. No such ladder was available, but I quickly found a bigger-sized studio monitor in a nearby room to use as a substitute foot stool. I know that it is NOT UNcommon to sometimes use a speaker as a stepping source when setting up a sound stage, but in a standard household? So it just got me to thinkin'....you know you have a LOT of gear when a big ol' speaker is the quickest "grab" to use as a small, but effective ladder. And then there was...LIGHT!

HaHaHa! I'm into cleaning MY studio out to sell what I don't use, and found some real treasures!

A Roland SH-101 monophonic RED synthesizer with the cool stage handle that will work on 6 "C" batteries for the stage. I never knew until I looked on eBay: $1000! I was astonished! I hooked it up, and it IS a real cool old analog synth. Seems that a lot of the rappers love this synth! Thought I'd never sell it, but now ---

You go in your garage to get out the christmas lights and you find a forgotten guitar amp providing warmth and shelter to a family of black widows.

I was setting up to shoot a video with a Green Screen in my house. I had the fabric but not the stands and brackets to mount them. Grabbed 4 mic stands and suspended the backdrop from them. Then I needed more lighting. Grabbed 4 more mic stands, clipped some cheap Walmart clamp lights to them and had the lights exactly where I needed them.

LOL! Yea, I was out in my garage, and found some real nice "bi-polar" speakers (not psychotically, just acoustically!) and found a lot of black widows making a nest in there! For those of you that want to buy some EXCELLENT rear surround speakers, please P.M. me!

One time, while living in West Texas, my PA was stored in my garage. We (the band)loaded the equipment up and transported it 3 and 1/2 hours to a saturday night gig. Carried my folded horn, ported subs into the place, set up and began sound checking when a rattlesnake came out of the port.

Music is thrilling!

Wild stories for sure! Gear used a ladder, as a filming apparatus, and dark living quarters for reptiles and arachnids! I hope the adventures keep on a-coming to this post!!!!

Well, we've got spiders, reptiles --- Here goes!

I was in a band down in Oklahoma (!). We lived in a "band house," and for the first time in years I had my own bedroom.

After practice that night (with lots of gear!), I got into my bed and started reading. Finally I turned off the light, and started dozing off. THEN, I felt something crawling up my arm. I turned the light on, and it was a SCORPION! It stung me real hard, and I started yelling for the other guys to get up and help me.

We went into the kitchen, and called the Poison Control Hotline. An old lady answered, and they told her that a scorpion stung me. She paused for about 2 minutes to look in her book as I was DYING! Finally, she got back on the phone and said "You say he got stung by WHAT?" I about passed out by that time, and then the poison lady came back on the phone. "It appears that local scorpions are not deadly." My bandmates said "What the f+#k?" She said "Just put some baking soda paste on the wound, and he'll be O.K."

They did that, with me shaking in my shorts, and then went into the bedroom and lifted up the mattress to find the scorpion. It ran around for awhile, until they crushed it many times.

I went back to bed eventually, but didn't sleep all night!
