I use the garritan orchestra, either as VIs or saving it from finale as an audio file.
When I do, I notice the pianos sound very distant, like there's too much reverb on it. I go to the mix window in finale to take down the reverb but I see the reverb is already off on that channel.
Is there anything else I can do to normalize the piano sound?
Thanks for ya help

I'm just going to venture a guess that the piano was sampled in it's place in the orchestra, in which case the sound is going to be naturally "roomy" sounding. In this case, even if you turn it up, you'll also be turning up the room sound as well. If you want a more close micd sounding piano and you like the Garritan stuff, you might check out their Steinway library. It's pretty highly regarded and I think you can buy it at different levels and prices. Check out their website.

imagine if John Williams and Trent Reznor met at Bernard Hermann's for lunch and Brian Eno was the head chef!

Re: Garritan pianos sound distant
I surprised that they would record their pianos so roomy. They're usually a good VI orchestra. anyway. thanks for the advice

I'm sure they record it roomy because it's an orchestra library and they are micing the piano to sound like it would sound if it were in an orchestra (usually in the back unless it's a concerto) rather than a solo piano or a rock piano close micing. It's not designed to be used in a different situation, although it could be if the sound works for that situation.

The lite edition Garritan Steinway I have does not come pre-positioned on an orchestral soundstage, and works great for rock, pop, jazz and Nashville sound-era (Floyd Cramer) country, but not barrelhouse/honky-tonk; for that, you need a tack piano. Anybody know any good ones?
