Review RAGE

Post by bagnall » Tue Apr 13, 2010 1:43 pm

got my listing back from the sci-fi dispatch listing 3 returns. ok the returns arn't a BIG deal (well they are really since I disagree in places) my main point is what are we paying for here? my rage is due to the fact of that for someone who's *supposed* to be giving reviews. cant even fill in forms properly. on my first return didn't bother to tick a box to state why it was returned.
ok they gave a line or two in comments when they didn't need to but they shouldn't of bothered. no capitals or full stops. even a few typo's and we are supposed to be paying for this?

amongs this I feel stuck in the middle here. from submitions in the past I got recommended to post songs towards scifi type listings by a few other crits / listeners. and now getting to the listings they are a problem. ( I know opinions differ but not this much)

looking through the forum at other posts to screeners I see the screener I had has had a few thank you's from other members. so I don't understand this. am i setting my standard too high thinking they should be bothered to tick boxes and such. because this really makes me think if people bother listening to songs properly. or just go for the profiles with pictures and long info. or a good submit history.

P.s I know my topic is not the best in gramma or spell but i' not getting payed to do this and im on a rant :)

Goodluck with composing and forwards
Regards,
Ben

I suggest you contact TAXI directly with your concerns.

Posting a rant here might make you feel better but won't get much action from TAXI and BTW makes you look less than professional, typos or not (which I agree aren't very professional, no matter who types them ;) ).

You may also want to take some time and watch the latest TAXI video which talks about how posting stuff like you did actually reflects poorly on you in the eyes of the industry, because, you better believe that industry pros are reading these forums. Watch the video. It may make you think twice next time. Be a pro in everything, including how you handle rejection, because you'll get a lot of it, justified or not, we all do.

A call or e-mail to TAXI will make you feel much better, I can almost guarantee it.

Good luck pursuing your concerns and with your music career.

Mazz is being very gracious.

I'm not perfect. I get bummed, like I've been punched in the stomach, by returns sometimes. But I've learned to take a deep breath (or two, or ten), and then figure out how to move forward.

Just yesterday I got rejected on something. Once I got done feeling like a loser, staring at the floor and feeling sorry for myself (I mean really -- it was my first attempt at a specific, difficult genre, and I did it in 3 nights after work -- what was I expecting?), I came onto the forum, I found a guy who had gotten 3 forwards out of 3 submissions on that same listing, and I congratulated him, and then asked if he'd be kind enough to listen to my rejected piece and give me whatever suggestions came to mind.

Just look at the difference in responses here in your thread, and over there on mine in Peer to Peer (see the thread about "Pls help me improve this orchestral piece, gang!" or something like that). That should tell you a lot.

The main thing is, there's a tremendous group of people on this forum, and there's not a single one who hasn't gotten that punch in the stomach feeling. It's what you choose to do afterward that will decide your future. Sometimes a situation comes down to deciding what's more important: convincing the other guy that you're right, or getting the outcome you want -- often pretty different paths.

Count to 10. Then do it again. Another motto around here is: Write, submit, forget, repeat; and do your best to make each new tune better than the last on as many levels as you can muster.

Best of luck to you,
CK

CK,

Great perspective in your response.

In the large scheme of things, a return on one listing is meaningless AND the corollary, in the large scheme of things, a forward on one listing is meaningless.

Building a catalogue is a marathon not a sprint. If one views the process as a sprint, there is quite a bit of emotional energy spent on one return. If one views the process as a marathon, one return is just part of the process. You take the rejection, and you keep running.

Certainly contact Taxi with questions as to how the screener should fill out the form.

That being said, for Y/N and Dispatch listings you only get a check box and optional comments as to why the track was returned. So really, a few words as to why without any boxes checked is giving you the required info. If there were typos and spelling errors which make you feel it was unprofessional, take that up with Taxi customer service-- they are always friendly and helpful.

I do understand that "rage" reaction when you first get a return. We've all been there and sometimes we need a deep breath and a day or two to sort it out.

You titled the thread with "review rage" but it was regarding a yes/no listing. The most productive thing you can do is post the listing, a link to the song, and full review (in this case it's just the reason for return) and see what feedback you get from peers. If you really feel strongly that the return was in error, also discuss that with customer service. Personally, I think you should get some peer opinions here first.

Good luck!
:) Casey

thank you all for the responses. well it was not rage over getting returns, we all get many returns I understand this. its what makes us improve. It was more over the not filling in forms properly (in which we pay to happen) this comes under the admin side of things. but i'll bring this up with taxi directly.

Yes, I agree that the forms should be filled in professionally with proper spelling and grammar. It's kind of like the state of audio: we have so many tools to make it sound great, and then it ends up on earbuds in a noisy room!! There's so many options for spell checking, but it seems like spelling and grammar have gone out the window in the online world.

I'm glad you're going to contact TAXI, that will do much more good than posting here will.

Let us know how it turns out.

Cheers!

I completely agree with the typos.

So unprofessional.

Hard to to value the opinion of someone you don't know who can't even spell right!
