Re: Expression = which dynamic (score) marking?
Vince, dunno if i am going sideways on this topic, but something i have learned doing ( or trying to do) midi mockups is that sometimes the duration of the note affects how it sounds. For ex: I had a note that sounded "funny", no matter how I changed the velocity. What I did was, to look at that same note somewhere in the score that sounded fine. What I discovered was that, even tho they could be the same note, a quarter note lets say, if the duration of one note was 326, that same note sounded different at 328. When I have trouble with one note, I copy the same velocity and duration of the same note that sounds fine, dunno if this makes sense!

Brindabella, that makes total sense! I mess around with velocity and duration on almost every note that sounds weird to me! Let's say, for instance, you're stacking french horn samples. Some sound good "as is," some don't. I know it's time-consuming, but your example is a great idea. When you get a sample sounding correct on a quarter note, for example, copy and paste it. If you have to transpose it, it may sound the same, but it may not, so you might have to experiment a little more.brindabella wrote:Vince, dunno if i am going sideways on this topic, but something i have learned doing ( or trying to do) midi mockups is that sometimes the duration of the note affects how it sounds. One other thing I learned the hard way: When importing Midi files into a scoring program, quantize each part FIRST! I'm not talking about your demo. Leave that as is. But this way, you'll avoid stuff like 64th notes and rests!

Hi Ern, thanks again for sharing your process with me! Its great to hear that one is never alone in what they're doing! Orchestral mock-ups is like learning a whole new life, really! It certainly is like one becomes the composer, conductor, as well as, the 50-60 performers executing the written intent of the composer. It is much to tackle, yet absolutely a great challenge!
Thanks again for your time!
Barry: thanks for your time as well!
Cheers,
Vincent!

Hi Brindabella, thanks for your input! Yes, that makes total sense to me, & I have experienced the same thing! Working with sample libraries is about four months old for me, so I realize there is SOOOO much to learn!
Ern, thanks again!
Cheers,
Vincent!

Excellent topic! Thanks Vincent!
I just "discovered" CC11 yesterday and it hit me like a brick. All this time I have been writing automation at the mixer level to control cres/decres and then totally have to re-work everything when I wanted to bring down the Celli a little bit. Now this makes sense to me.
Thanks everyone for the great advice!
