Play 2

Post by t4mh » Fri May 07, 2010 8:07 pm

Just thought I would let everyone know since I have been doing EWQL installs, and grabbing updates as I go, they have a new PLAY update on the soundsonline website. Version 2.0.8 Fixes some stuff. My installs haven't been without some problems but this version has magically fixed a few issues pertaining to OS X 10.6.3 stability and 64bit mode So you might want to try it out. My next problem associated with this update is that right now LOGIC is not recognizing it as an authorized AU plugin. The Mac has been a challenge but I've been learning!

Are you running Play under Snow Leopard?? How's it working you brave soul?

I'm scared to death to update my music machine, but really, really want to. I can't lose my orchestra, does it work? Any problems at all?

Thanks,
B

So far, standalone works great! Play 2 optimizes cpu usage even more than 1.2.5 did. I can't even see any cpu usage, just disk in the player. However, I'm just getting everything going right now so we'll see... Play 2 is supposed to fix problems with Snow Leopard. Again, we'll see how it shakes out. My EW installs are completing as I type this so I'll check back later. I also still have to get some of my midi going but I'll try to post the progress and my observations about the update.

Note: the soundsonline people have been very helpful so far on making their stuff run on Snow Leopard. But then I've pestered them some... What can I say. I'm a complete newbie with the OS.

Thanks for the update! I'll have to grab this update asap. Their sound libraries are great but they really do need to focus on the Play interface.

I'll give it a whirl. One thing I've wanted in play is a way to see what I have loaded in each channel in some sort of grid or list without having to pull down a menu. Wonder if they've addressed this with play 2?

Play has ended up being a bit underwhelming so far. I much prefer Kontakt, even though I have some issues with it as well, such as it forgetting output assignments!

Such is the world we've chosen to live in

thanks for the heads up!

EDIT: Just went to the site to download and it looks like they've addressed the browser issue! Can't wait to try it, that's been a big beef for me with Play since I use large templates often and it's time consuming to check what's where!

Logic problem solved too! Finished the EW library installs, re-applied the Play 2 Update, sort of like applying a service pack on Windows servers, Logic picked up PLAY right away! Works great! I had some unexpected issues with how Play comes up on a track in Logic but I'll figure that out.

I have to say Logic looks really impressive. Lavish and vast. Between Logic and EWQL I have LOTS to learn! So far the Mac is quite impressive albeit different. 64 bit mode, Snow Leopard is rock solid! Logic comes with a demo, I haven't looked it over real closely but it appears to have 40 tracks of audio, loops and soft synths running with convolution reverbs and so forth. Takes up 6.3G of RAM. I was able to play this in 64 bit mode and the cpu monitor never went above 50%! So I guess it will handle that much.

I'm thinking I'll probably have to move my libraries to a separate drive sooner or later but for now this should work. I'll have to pester everyone for their thoughts about the best way to do this, I'm thinking Firewire but I'll address that later. I still have to get some other things going that I'll be working on this weekend.

For Pro Tools 8 users, I have good news and bad news...

First the good... I installed it last night and now I can actually add PLAY in an existing session (or a new one) and have the plug-in pop up and be able to go back and forth between the browser and the player without having to shut down my session and re-open it.

Now the bad... I CAN'T HEAR ANY SOUNDS!!!! UGH! Good thing I've been using Reaper to do my "composing" in for cues that need my PLAY samples in them. I opened it up a new session in Reaper, added PLAY and it worked like a charm there. So, just wanted to pass that along in case any PT 8 users were thinking of installing the update. I'm going to investigate a bit more today and see if I can figure out what's going on or if I'll just have to resolve that the issue can't be resolved :-(

- Big Blue

UPDATE:

I just rebooted for the first time since installing the update and voila! I can now hear the samples!!!!! I CAN ACTUALLY USE PLAY WITH PRO TOOLS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes, I REALLY am that excited!

Oh wow, I didn't realize that Play was at 2.0 and I somehow missed that Cubase is now Snow Leopard ready. Updated both packages today. I really like the new Play interface. Everything is smooth so far.

I think I'm gonna just take the plunge and put Snow Leopard on this machine later this week. :)

I'm waiting to hear some success stories using it with Sonar. Also, if it doesn't work, how easy will it be to downgrade? It's only been out for a couple of days and Doug Rogers is already talking about the next update (2.0.9) coming soon. I might just sit back and wait until the dust clears.

One thing I read is that once you save your DAW session using the new Play 2 then that session would not be able to load a previous version of Play should you decide to revert back. Not sure how true this is, so if anybody can verify this it would be helpful.

Hmmm, way to go Mr. Buzzkill. Now I'm scared again. Maybe I should at least wait until I'm not under a few deadlines to get bold. :(

On a positive note, it "seems" like this version of Play can stream a bit more efficiently than the one I upgraded from. I guess that's a start.
